I'm sure I was only one of many doing excited Spongebob looks when Amir kept unleashing them. I've seen Gina use the push kick to nice effect, as well.
My experience is that the push kick is hard to utilize in point karate sparring UNLESS I'm very quick to circle out. Fortunately I *am* quick. They come out with two things: their beloved blitz, or a pumping side kick. I got fed up right before sparring once and did pump kicks up and down the floor, saying, "I'm just going to do this the whole time, OK?" because it's so predictable.
I should point out that the more I do it, the more I see why people hate on sport karate. It looks silly and with the exception of a few people, it is pitterpat. The only time it ever looks srz is when it looks like......olympic rules TKD sparring, which you best believe is full contact, and no pitterpat EVER.
I do it for a few reasons, however: the little Swplet loves it, and it is poetry in motion to watch her fight, and use some of my go-to moves because she's smrt. It is an excellent workout. It helps my footwork and timing for MMA standup, and I get to fight more people of different ages, shapes and sizes, which is helpful all round.
