It's a little different with Canon/Nikon I suppose, with new camera bodies and lenses being released every few months (minimum) for different areas of photography. From beginner to mid range, prosumer to professional and sports/wildlife to portrait or landscape.
Sometimes Canon edges out Nikon, and other times Nikon edges Canon out.
It's also a lot easier to switch console brands. Switching camera brands is often a HUGE choice, due to the amount of lenses and gear tailored to a specific brand, similar to having thousands of pounds/dollars worth of games for a system.
Even with all that, I still think brand bias is stupid. Both companies make excellent cameras, you can't really choose wrong.
