Jobs & the drug test
I have not been a big fan of jobs drug testing at all. There are select jobs where I can understand they would do it like police officer or pilot or something putting people in danger. But smaller jobs especially paying anywhere close to minimum wage should not be testing. The reason I bring this up is because I just got my second job that tested me and my results were not up to there par. First off when I was 14 I tested positive for cocaine and weed because I smoke a 51'er like an idiot for the first time but I got that job some how. I thought that was amazing. Now I go to an interview almost ten years later at a car dealership for a mechanics position and not mentioned in the add for the job but they say, "youll pass a drug test right?" and being on the spot I said yes. He gave me the paperwork and figured I am going to fail for marijuana might as well not go. Then I get called in again for a second interview and said they are awaiting on the results. Well, I figured its a cold chance they will call me again. Well today I basically woke up to the call of them saying we want you to start tomorrow. I could not believe it. I am a hard worker and do not mess around but it is amazing how I was still able to get the job. All in all I am so freaking happy about this though, I need it for my son. Moral of the story is: Just because you smoke alot of marijuana should not stop you from trying to get a job, Even at a place that will test you. I bet there are plenty of people that wouldve got a great job and keeped them good but the fear of failing and testing positive for marijuana has cost alot of people there jobs. Who here has lost or gotten a job after failing the drug test or not going? I want to see how common this might be.

When taking drugs begins to impact on your chances of getting a job, then really you need to re-evaluate.
I'm not preaching, you can do what you want but all im saying is had this gone the other way and you hadn't got the job you couldnt have really complained.

Yea I think testing for marijuana is kinda of bullshit most of the time. I'm working for the same company I started with back in college. Back when I first started it was in a much lower position and a job I got for the sole purpose of "party money". Man I was tested 3 times during that stint of about 18months. All three times were within a 3-4 days of me using cocaine or ecstasy and I tested clean all 3 times.
I'm worried that these tests can't test for the drugs that should be tested for. I don't smoke pot regularly, I prefer alcohol but I think for most jobs your performance should determine whether you keep it rather than if you smoked some pot on the weekend.

I agree with this line of reasoning in theory, but had the government not set this whole situation to what it is. He would not have to worry about what he does in his off time. I totally disagree with restriction of ones personal rights because another doesnt want it. Its that "I would never do that and you shouldnt either" attitude.

I live in the UK and we have no laws on drug testing in the work place that i'm aware of.
I was speaking from a purely theoretical point of view.

I rather not hire someone because they smoke cigarettes rather than not hire them for smoking weed. If they come to work and do there work that is how it should be. But usually a cigarette smoker will need a few breaks and when I walk into somewhere and there are employees in a bundle smoking it does not look good. Also if I provided health care those damn smokers make it expensive for all of us. So if you fail a drug test and get the job, What are they looking for?

Drug testing really has nothing to do with the business itself, it's for insurance. If you get hurt on the job, testing positive for a drug, whether it be Marijuana or something more serious, the insurance doesn't have to pay out on your claim.

Uh... let me get this straight. You tell a potential employer that you would pass a drug test when you would actually fail?
That's not just using drugs, that's using drugs and lying about it. I don't think many employers like that in an applicant.
