OK folks, I gotta situation here. A family friend has invited me and my family(mother and brother) to a wedding of his daughter. So, what's the problem? The problem is I have never seen the girl in my entire life, and I won't know a single person on the wedding except the aforementioned friend. And I hate weddings!
Is there a way I could avoid that, and not insult my friend? Is this a normal situation in your country? A grown man has to come to a wedding of a family friend even tho he doesn't know the bride or the groom, or anybody for that matter!

Been there, done that!
My parents sent me to a wedding they didn't wanna go to.
I thought it would suck. Well...it did.
Didn't know one person, except my cousin (she was in the same position as i was) and my aunt and uncle.
It sucked. Not even alcohol could make me feel better.
I'm not telling you not to go...who knows, maybe there's a lot of hot women there, or you might bump into someone you know. Small chances...but who knows.
PS: i hate weddigs also. In the last 2 years i've worlked at over 100 weddings: waiter or bartender! I'm sick of weddings!
I love weddings.... well if they open bar i do. and dont say youll go and then not show up cuz they still have to pay for your dinner and those can be 30+ per person sometimes. tho does also depend..... i know in smaller towns they may just have a buffet..... if its open bar, go and give a card with $50 bucks in it and get a good meal and take full advantage of the open bar! and if you dont really know anyone, all the more reason to just go have fun and make an ass of yourself.
that's kinda strange. i thought that the bride and groom were the ones who did the invitations. NOT the other people attending the wedding.
maybe they're planning on having a huge wedding and don't mind if relatives and friends invite who they want, too. in that case, you should suck it up and go because huge weddings have f****** amazing food. and usually an open bar.
personally i love weddings, but that comes with the territory of enjoying working at them. the food is always my favorite part lol.
It's a Serbian wedding folks, there's no open bar. I'll have to sit through the whole ordeal of terrible music(including the brass section, trubaci as we call it), no one to talk to except my brother, the boring protocol, and I can't even get drunk!
And I don't dance kolo.
Watch and listen:
The food will probably be OK, but to waste 6,7 hours of my life for food? I really hope some obligation will prevent me from coming.

RUN!!!! RUN LIKE THE WIND MAN!!!!!!
well i know Chicago is a bit different from other places, atleast the other places ive been too, but MUST be open bar.... if its cash bar you no longer have friends.... period.... family wont even like you anymore. Dinner must be sit down.... can be family style at the table, but there is no buffet.... sit down only. and polish weddings and funerals there is ALWAYS a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of wine on the table that gets replaced just before it goes empty, plus during dinner they come around and take drink orders too.
theres a reason we joke (im polish, german and irish, so alcoholic by genetics), Whats the difference between a polish wedding and a polish funeral? one less drunk.
When you say a *big wedding* how many people are you talking about?!
And about serbian weddings - they are pretty similar to some romanian weddings. The parents of the groom and bride invite all their friends and relatives...if the parents live in a village, they invite the whole village. If the parents don't live there anymore, but your grandparents do, then they will invite other people there.
I'm not kidding!
My parents were invited at a wedding: 900 guests!
I don't know if that is a lot or not, by your standards, but i find that number monstrous.
