Well.. I'm leaving in 2 days for South Korea. I've got a job teaching English. Big surprise right? That's what everyone goes to South Korea for. Now that the time to leave is finally here, I'm feeling a bit nervous.

I will go there next year or probably the year after for at least 3 months. Are you moving forever or just for a couple of years? Which Visa did you apply for and how did you get it?

Sorry I didn't respond to my own thread earlier. I think it had something to do with the 24 hour flight and the adjusting to being in a completely foreign country.

I'm not worried about the North, and neither or the South Koreans. They say that the North is always starting shit just to get attention. That's pretty much what I've heard from North/South experts.

I'm only moving here for 1 year, but after this year I'm going to backpack through the rest of Asia. I'm going to try to make a stop in some Thai kickboxing camps for a few months. After backpacking around for a year or so I may come back to South Korea to teach again.

It's pretty damn cool here so far.

Forgive me but as someone who has actually spent some time there, I'm left with one question.

Why???

The weather sucks. The food sucks. The living conditions suck. Your northern border friends suck. Hell, even by yellow fever standards go (and I love the Asian girls) ...the women suck as well.

Wow man.... generalize much? You appear to be someone who belongs in the USA, and only there.

I did choose to come here, yes. So far every meal I've had has been incredible. So far I've seen some beautiful women. The city I live in seems really cool so far and has great night life. Everyone I've met has been friendly. The living conditions don't exactly suck. I'm currently on the worlds fastest internet.

Either way. I guess it's just not for you. I've only been here 2 days, so it's hard for me to say. I've had only good experiences thus far.

Good experiences you say? I've had good experiences in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan as well. Doesn't mean the trips were worth writing home about.

You're obviously there on a civilian nature, and one where you can ignore the geopolitical nature of the beast of the Korean peninsula. All the advise I can give you is to watch what you eat and drink as I can almost guarantee you what's on your dinner plate is not what's listed on the menu.

As for generalizing...that's hard for me to do since I've actually spent time in most countries that you've likely only heard about in books. I just speak from personal experience which tells me that nothing good outside of cheap electronics and halfway decent Soju comes from Korea. If you're looking for anything else remote to Asian culture I can think of a half dozen other countries to recommend before where you're at at the moment. Sorry if that offends. Well, not really.

I know quite some people who went to Korea and also not only for a short holiday trip and none of them had any kind of bad experience you tell about. They encountered nice people, good food and high living standard. But then again, they lived among normal native people and not on an army camp and didn't try to water board anyone
