Ok i made this thread cause i had a weird question i was curious about and thought it would be cool to have a thread where you could post weird questions that pop in your head to see if anyone knows the answer to or that you want to conversate over

My question is

I was just watching a Criminal Minds episode and the end quote had me thinking

it was

"Kids dont need fairy tales to tell them dragons exist, kids need fairy tales to tell them that dragons can be killed"

Now this got me thinking, mainly because how cool the last scene in game of thrones was with the dragons.

At what age or time do/did Dragons go from monsters/bad guys to cool creatures/good guys.

Call me a dumbass because I have no factual evidence or proof but my opinion is that it was around the 17th/18th centuries. The reason (lol) I think that is because in the age of reason (17th century) people became more rational due to increased opportunities for education, free thinking, literature whatever else etc and because of that mystical creatures became less frightening. Because people were able to realize these things no one had ever seen probably did not exist and so forth became that of humor, lore, points of interest instead of something to actually fear etc. In movies and books dragons are still often portrayed as bad guys (ie the hobbit, reign of fire, world of Warcraft etc)

I could be wrong, I could be way off, just a guess

For me it was when I saw Pete's dragon Not sure when that was, because the film came out before I was born, but man did I think they were cool after that movie.

yeah it just struck me as interesting for it seams like most movies when i was growing up dragons were bad guys also in books i was read (exception was puff the magic dragon for me) disney was making them bad guys that the hero had to kill/beat also almost every knight had to kill the dragon to rescue the girl

but now we get movies like dragonheart, how to train your dragon, the shrek movies, eragon ect..

it just seams like society decided that dragons make better good guys then bad guys but i was wondering if it was a time/year that it changed or is it because of my age that i only remember/watch read books where they are not bad guys, this is also a generalization for i know there are still movies books where they are bad but it seams most of them they are good

In European culture the dragon has traditionally been synonymous with the devil, but in Chinese culture, dragons symbolize power, strength and good luck. Maybe a lot of film makers recently got inspired by the Chinese.
