UFC 157 Recap: Rousey on top of the (MMA) World
Well, 1st round Armbar victory for the champ...who called it?
Casual fans called it, seasoned fans, and bloggers alike called it, but Carmouche didn't make it as easy as that now did she? Of course not.
Both rushing to centre of the cage, Rousey attempted to clinch up early and impose her size advantage and her grappling prowess eventually taking Carmouche to the mat. Establishing dominance via a variation of a Bulldog Choke, but this is the point that Rousey fans, an MMA fans as a whole didn't see coming...
...Carmouche transitioned to the back attempting a RNC, before locking in a neck crank, the postergirl of WMMA looked in dire straits before shaking herself free of the hold. That point on it was all Rousey.
Carmouche was all grit and heart, all the way to the tapout at 4:49 of the first round. The longest Rousey has ever had to fight, the most adversity her young career has seen to this point. Ronda Rousey truely made history, she has claimed her place in MMA history.
Yet it made me wonder...
...what an opportunity Cyborg had missed out on. We can argue the whole 'her strength is just steroids' all we want, but if Cyborg could have ever made 135lbs, then she would have had the size, strength and sheer brute power to have outgrappled Rousey. If we saw Cyborg make weight healthily, she would have beaten the Rousey we saw at 157, and would have powered out of any dominant position Rousey could have established.
What is next?
Tate/Zingano is an intruiging fight, and I predict the UFC seeing the winner as a potential challenger to Rousey, the loser of the fight being a stern test for Carmouche.
With more signings being announced each week, the 135lbs division is hotting up...and it's an exciting time to be a fan of WMMA, and MMA alike.
