What are they doing?

Hi guys, first post so please go easy.
Although I have been a fan since UFC 1 something has recently been eluding me.
Just before a fighter enters the ring a referee seems to do a full "nightclub queue" frisk on them; What are they looking for and have they ever found something?
Thank you.
Ken

I have recently taken up cage fighting.
I love it but don't think the budgie will last long

They seemed to ramp up the pre-fight frisk after greasing allegations. Both GSP and Anderson were accused of greasing in fights among others.

No problem. It's not an "official" answer to the question, just an observation.
