What is the difference between Boxing and Kickboxing?

im sorry if that is a dumb question. but for the past few weeks i was wondering about boxing. to get in shape and to have fun and to help me with my stress.

my friend said 'there is kicking in kickboxing' is that the ONLY difference?

Not really.

Knees, and elbows are normally allowed in Kickboxing.

In kick boxing you also practice knee/elbow/kick hit not only boxing. It is better IMO

Good question, the kickboxing I do has nothing to do with elbows. Obviously you use all kinds of kicks, knees etc in combination with punching. But what anyone who has not done both can't tell you is the movement is different as are how you hold your hands. In boxing you duck and otherwise hop around a lot, its different in kickboxing when you just duck a punch from a kickboxer your going to get the opportunity to smell his leg/knee/foot. And with the same movement you use in boxing your legs are entirely vulnerable to leg kicks. With your hands you tend to keep them higher because you have head kicks to worry about etc. Those are the big differences.

In my opinion boxing > kickboxing in a street fight against joe schmoo, but a kickboxer will typically beat a boxer in a fight. (for fieos, im talking 2 guys equal in every way, with the exception of fighting style )

Boxing over Kickboxing in a street fight? Im not sure about that and yes i know you said IMO. A kickboxer would win faster( well maybe not faster) and in a more devestating way simply because of more weapons in his arsenal rather that just hands.

I used to think the same, until I read got fight. If you throw a kick in a street fight, you're off balance and there's a good chance you'll get taken down. It's going to be eye gouging and crotch kicks from there. I would think moving forward and boxing would be your best bet since most "street fighters" couldn't throw a proper kick to save their lives.

Traditional kickboxing does not involve elbows, but since muy thai has become so popular, many people combine both. Having practiced both extensively, I can tell you kickboxing will give you a more well rounded workout due to the full range of movements, but boxing will do wonders for your cardio and conditioning. Both are however excellent exercises to get in shape with.

Thumbs up Streetfight

I think the best way to win a street fight is to get in close enought to take the guy down, throw some dirty punches, and finish it with some jui-jutsu and either choke him unconsciouse or brake something!

i have had a couple of street fights and people dnt know how to fight, they frow punches till they cant breath there is no technique to street fights ur better just letting them punch step back at an angle and knock them out wid one punch kapow right in jaw break their nose or sutting funny like tht or round house kick them to there head people dnt react quick enough to stop it

Kickboxing also teaches you the ancient art of "watergunning", "brick breaking" and how to tie a cherry stem into a knot just using your tounge. Great stuff.
