Not really MMA

But how the hell do those scales they use at the weigh ins work? The scales where some dude from the commision pokes this slider and magically reads out a weight. I've never seen those sort of scales outside of MMA/Boxing. Are they just strain gages with that slider thing set to the weight class? Why don't they use digital scales? Why do they sometimes take so long to read out the weight?

Ugh, I feel stupid posting this.

I think there is one of those scales at the gym I go to.

I guess it is less easy to tamper and get away with than a digital scale?

Its more accurate, digital scales are fairly faulty in all honesty on most you can lean ahead and back and fluctuate your weight slightly as well as the fact that many times if you get on and off the scale your weight can be as much as a pound off on two back to back readings.

But how exactly do these scales work? Why does it take so long to read out a weight? Why do they poke and prod that slider thing?

Those scales are just medical scales. They used to have them in all the doctors offices...now they're mostly digital.

The way they work is you stand on the pad. There is a rod that goes up to the top part where the weights are. The weights are just counterbalances that you move to equal up the weight that is standing on the pad. When you reach the correct weight the top bar will balance in the middle.

It's kind of the same principle as a pendulum scale or the scales of justice...weight is counter balanced to figure out how much something weights.

The reason they use them in MMA and boxing is they are more accurate and harder to tamper with.

There's a fat kid and a thin kid on a see-saw. The thin kid keeps moving forward until the see saw is balanced.

You've never used a triple beam balance in a science class before...or been weighed at the doctor's office?

Wouldn't the fat kid have to slide forward? Great analogy, though.

PS- I could be wrong, I'm a lawyer, Jim, not a physicist.

Bugger, yes the fat kid goes forward.

Eventually the fat kid has to start taking of his clothes...

No, I've never used a triple beam balance and I get weighed with a digital scale.
