So many orginizations/fighters!! Help!!

So I am pretty new to MMA. I watched the CBS fights and I was drawn in instantly. I'm trying to learn about the different fighters and all, but there are so many fighters. Who is really the best? On CBS they talked about the Fedor guy
(don't even ask me to spell his last name) being the best in the world. But then the UFC people (I'll get to that question in a second) say that the GSP guy is the best. Is there a ranking system or something to see who's really the best?

Now, on to the organizations. All I know of are Strikeforce and UFC. Are they the same? Like, as in the NFC and AFC? Do the champions from each one fight the other guy at the end of the year or something? Or are they seperate from each other? And if that is the case, how can anyone really know who is the best?

Sorry this is so long, I'm just trying to figure all this stuff out. I've always been more of a traditional sports fan, and I really like MMA and want to learn as much about it as I can.

This Christ you preach, I know. But who are you?

I will be following this post closely as I am looking for a lot of the same answers. I do know though that UFC and Strikeforce dudes don't fight each other. As you poined out this makes it very difficult to say anyone is truly the best...

The UFC and Strikeforce are two totally different organizations although they are both using the same sport... mma (mixed martial arts). Not comparable to AFC/NFC, which are two conferences in the same org.
Strikeforce is run by Scott Coker (their CEO) and owned by Silicon Valley Sports. The UFC is run by Dana White (their president) and owned by Zuffa (which is run by the Fertitta bros.)

Concerning who's the best fighter, that is really subjective especially since it's so unlikely to ever see Fedor compete against the best in the UFC. But to find the best fighters in different weight classes, this thread by IronMan contains the closest thing to consensus rankings I've ever read:

Thanks for the answers. That link was helpful, although I've only even heard of a handful of the fighters on any of them. From what I can gather, Fedor is the best. At least record wise, I did see that Anderson Silva is ranked highly in Light Heavyweight and Middleweight, so to me that would kind of balance out Fedor's record.

I'm gonna do my homework on this because like I said in the OP, the sport instantly drew me in.

I also see and hear the name Pride come up a lot. And a friend told me it was a Japanese league (who knew Japan even had mma), but didn't really know a lot about it. What happened to it? Are there any of the fighters on these top 10 lists that came from Pride? And also, how long ago did it cease to exist?

It's a good thing that I'm posting this on the newbs board. lol I have a feeling I would be getting pummeled for asking all these questions on the main boards. I know how forums work....

Yeah Pride FC was UFC's biggest competition that was founded in 1997. Zuffa (the parent company of UFC) bought Pride back in 2007.

There are lots of fighters that came from Pride. From IronMan's rankings these are some of the ones that came famous in Pride:

Fedor Emelianenko
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Alistair Overeem
Mauricio Shogun Rua
Anderson Silva
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Shinya Aoki
Quinton Rampage Jackson

Please tell me which are missing

And these are the fighters that are in the list and have fought in Pride:

Nick Diaz
Gegard Mousasi
Vitor Belfort
Dan Henderson (I wasnt sure where to put him)
Yushin Okami (fought only twice)

And these wasnt on the list but was succesful in Pride and fights now in the UFC.

Mirko Cro Cop
Wanderlei Silva
Takanori Gomi
Mark Coleman (got fired)

Sry i ran out of time please tell me which are missing

If you go to wikipedia, they have a great history of UFC. I started there and got a great background overview.

Yeah, I've been doing some digging on wiki and found out some pretty good stuff. I think I really might like Pride. I caught a few of their fights on youtube. Love those freaking entrances and the pageantry of the show. But I understand why it probably wouldn't work very well in North America.

Actually Pride is not around anymore. DREAM is the big MMA promotion over in Japan now. There are many other MMA organizations such as Bellator that are the same sport, just different fighters and different owners.

Something else you may find interesting is K-1. It combines all striking techniques such as boxing, kick boxing, muay thai, karate, etc... It is very interesting in my opinion.

Sherdog.com is a pretty good website for fighter records. It has every fighter that has ever fought, and who they have beat and lost to, how, where and when on the records in the Fight Finder.

i.e type Chuck Liddell in Sherdogs fight finder - boom you know everything about his career.

Also mma-core.com is a very good website that holds pretty much every MMA fight, well all the major ones in a video library.

Plus if you want to get into the Ultimate Fighter which is a reality TV show by the UFC owners and promoters... Go to ultimatefighter.com < it has all 11 seasons, every fight and episodes. Ultimate Fighter is reality competition where people have to fight every week to get a 6 figure contract with the UFC.
