Conditioning outside of the gym?

I have came a long way this year to getting in better shape (weight loss, lifting weights) and thought I was ready for the gym floor.

My first boxing class was one on one and the instructor pushed me but not beyond my limits. The second class was brutal no less then 5 times I had to stop to avoid passing out or getting sick. I went as hard as I could. I don't feel judged but I want to improve. After class one of the students told me to pace myself, probably a good idea.

My question: Should I start a training program outside of the gym or just spend more time in the gym?

An optional question. How do you guys feel about a 40 year old fatty that can't keep up in class but giving it his all?

I'm 44, started training at 42, and have a desk job. I see these types of posts once in awhile about training before/during training. Since I've been thru it already, my suggestion is always, "show up and do the best you can". The workouts will take care of everything else in terms of cardio, strength, etc.

Don't compete physically with the 20/30 somethings, you're 40. Training this stuff is an accomplishment on its own. Be proud of that. Personally I've found that getting as technically proficient as possible has become my "edge". While I would kill for their cardio., I've found that technique goes along way towards evening the odds.

Also, what you have been told about pacing yourself is spot on. Learn to relax and do things correctly without resorting to pure strength. You'll last longer.

Feel free to message me if you need other help/suggestions. Us old guys gotta stick together!!

Outside of the gym, you can do things such as running, swimming, riding a bike, etc to get your cardio up. You can also do things such as lifting weights using low weights and high reps to develop your muscles and get them used to longer workouts as opposed to short bursts.

As for your age, 40 is not too late to get into a gym. It is a great way to stay in shape and it is a fun way to do it. Giving it your all is a great but you do need to know your limits to prevent injury.
