32 years old and starting MMA, need some advice

12 years ago i made a fight team and did some cage fighting but i quit for personal reasons, which i highly regret now.

I've have a military background, i used to body build and used to be a firefighter so i'm no stranger to pain.

However, my life has taken a major dump, i cant find a job so i have no car and no money.

I went to this really high class MMA gym and explained that i wanted to fight to make money and if they could waive my monthly dues.

They told me to attend a couple classes before the gave me the final descision. I also explained that the last 3 years all i have done is sit around smoke cigerattes and play xbox so my endurance is zero atm.

I went to the classes, but what they wanted to see be do before they aggreed to wavie the fees was see me spar. Thus, i knew i was going to get the shit kciked out of me so they see if i could take punches and not quit. I performed like crap in terms actually fighting back but i did take some punishment and fight back.

Thus, they said come back monday. Now, as i said before, i've been a chain smoking couch potato for teh last 3 years so i new what was going to happen. So my plan was to simply not quit. It was a 2 hour class, which 1 whole hour was just for sparring. 10 mins before sparring would have been over i was puking my brains out.

So as of now i can train for free in hopes of getting some fights to make some money. However, as i said before, i have a large back ground in physical activities so i know and was used to beign sore after any type of training. However, this saturday and right now i cant recall ever being so sore in my life. Every muscle in my body hurts like hell. The only things that doesnt hurt is my toe nails and hair.

When i talked to the man in charge i told him my current status so it wouldnt be any suprises when i sucked ass at sparring. However, i didnt expect to be as winded as i was or be this sore. I mean im so dam sore that it was like me body is in shock and i can barley stand up or move my arms lol even in the pool.

Now heres my problem, because hes waiving the fees for now he wants me at the gym 5 days a week 2 hours per day and soon twice a day 2 hours each time. I'm lucky right now that i only had to train 2 days and get two days off. However, the long 5 day strecth is coming quikly and i feel like i survived a plane crash.

I know that if i miss any days nexted week my credibility will be shot and the oppurtunity will be lost and ill never get to train again until i can afford it which wont be for a very very long time. Thus, its do or die for me right now or else i'd be

I know the mind set i'm need to have and that is just dont stop and it will get better. But i have just quit smoking 2 days ago and i'm 260 pounds with some muscel. So i'm just a moving punching bag in the gym right now lol.

I just need to hear it from some other MAA fighters to "man the f&ck UP bicth" If you can do that i'd be gratful lol.

Honestly, I think you didn't take the smartest road to get back on the fighting track. I don't know how long you where thinking about your "comeback", but you definitely could have prepared better. Getting back in general shape (at least a bit) before starting the MMA training takes only a couple of weeks and costs nothing. Going from 0 to 100 can damage your heart, so some endurance/cardio/BWE build up training would have been a way better start. You'd still get severe muscle ache when you go over to MMA after a couple of weeks as your muscles still wouldn't be used to the movements, but you'd lower your risk of a heart attack significantly.

So maybe you can talk with the trainer to give you three or four weeks preparation time. You can promise him to give him a report every other day so he can see that you are serious.

If you don't want to do that, but you just want to fight through the pain, see at least a doctor for a stress electrocardiogram to check your heart.

Either way, you wanted it, so "man the f&ck UP bicth" have fun in the cage and keep us up to date how it goes.

I think they "green lighted" you. My gym does it. When some one comes in saying they want to fight they grind them into the ground. If they are seriously giving you this chance and you are serious about wanting it. Suck it the hell up. You went from zero to 100 in a week...or how ever long....Like voiceless said you should have prepared a lil before but oh well too late now. Plus it wouldn't matter if you prepared or not they would wear your ass out.

Now just because you are sore don't mean shit. Do not go into the gym and complain. If you complain they will throw more at you. They are trying to break you. They want to see how bad you want this....the question is.....How bad do you want it

thanks for the responses guys. And to the question "how bad do i want it" is really the inncorrect question cause its the only thing i have right now. Thus, i HAVE to do it. I'm up shit creeck without a paddle. i NEED to fight to make some money to get out of this bind i'm in. I dont have dreams of becoming a champion, i just want to make some cash in the next 5 years doing this and maybe have it help me get through school while i'm at it.

When i did this 12 years ago it was it was more about pride and bragging rights. I liked to talk about it to people so i could feel important.

Now i really fighting for survial. I have had a string of problems that has lead me to be homeless, gain a felony, get divorced, in jail, lost about 4 jobs in the last 5 years, i have no car, and the town i live in has a 40% unemployment rate. Lucky i'm living with my mom right now.

Thus, i'm going to be treating this like its my job cause i hope to start amature fighting within 3 to 4 months. And maybe in a year do a pro fight.

The place that has accepted me is high speed and low stress so far. I hope after they get to know me they start treating me like my drill sergeants did. My drill sergeants are still my icons. Anyhow, i'm not considering this my comeback. I havent told any of my old friends that i'm getting back in the game so i really dont care about my name anymore, just money to get back on my feet. However, i must admit, that i havent felt this good about myself since i was in the military years ago. The last 3 years i've been a hermit. I've slept all day and stayed up all night playing xbox and smoking cigs. I've been depresed off my ass.

However, this is like my "hail mary" attempt at getting my life going again. I'm going to be on these forums a lot instead of "gamespot" lol so i can learn some ins and outs by you all the guys here and stay motivated. From what i've read arouond so far this communtity seems really cool.

Well i've been around long enough to know that this pain is temporary and my cardio will come around soon enough. I just didnt expect my cardio to be so bad that it felt like i had asmaha lol or that my muscles felt like i;ve been in a car crash. But to the one question as to why i didnt try in get in some shape beofre i went there well it was becasue i only train when im motivated. I wouldnt want to train on my own then go to the club and hope that they will sponser me. I need someone chewing my ass out and yelling at me to "unf@ck myself" and to "drink a lot of water cause it going to be hot in hell" lol. So i just need to suck it up. I've been thinking about that movie spartacus where they fought to the death with weapons and the like. Anyway ill keep yall updated :P

Six weeks of doing nothing because of an injury is enough to almost evaporate your muscles. The mean thing is, your brain will still tell you to do 20 pull-ups for your warm up, but your body already struggles doing more than 10. That can be really frustrating when restarting with the training.

It would be better to be motivated on your own just by the hunger for the training for training's sake, because you won't always have someone to yell at you. Intrinsic motivation is usually better than extrinsic motivation.

i totally aggree with you but i have to admit that is an epic weakness in my personality. For me to train hard i NEED someone chewing my ass out. However, the good thing is when i do have that i respond well to it, maybe more than most people who may be offended by it, i seem to thrive on it. I always chuckled when my mean ass drill sergeants would flip out on me but then i get doin what needs to be done.

However, like you said, if i have that inner drive i'd have an easier time training. Maybe i just need to get my ass kicked a couple times to make me wake up.

Anyhow, i'm just wondering, for those of you that has fought a bit and lost a few fights: What is it like to lose in a real MMA fight? Do you get used to it? is it real bad on your pride? ect.

I've only fought a couple times 12 years ago but never lost in an actual match. I know that since my goal here is to keep going for several years that i'm going to lose at one time or another. I have gotten my ass beat down in training which never bothered me cause the fighter were veterans and known bad asses so it was expected. However, losing in the context of match will different and i just want some pointers on handling it. I'm jumping head first in this like i did when i started 12 years ago even though i know a lot has changed since then. But my idea is that its better to jump into a cold pool rather than walk in slowly. Thus, since i know fighters are way more bad ass then then they were 12 years ago in the amanture field i'l be getting my ass wooped and get used to it before i start winning consistently. After i start winning consistently in amantures i;ll make a move towards some pro fights, buts thats going to be a year or two away from now. But for know, i just want to know what its like to lose and how to handle it. When i was in high school football i was so competitve that if we lost a football game i'd cry lol. I know i wouldnt cry if i lost a fight now but i just need some safe guards in place so when it does happen i'm already brained washed to accept it. I mean i know that every fighter loses sometime in their carrer, sometimes to someone unexpected, but i never had a chance or the guts to ask someone how they handle it. I'm really a competitive person so i dont want that to be my downfall.

Well thanks for responding guys this is good stuff.

Its more disappointment than anything else. If/when you lose take it as a lesson. When you start out you will make a mistake or two. Thats the learning process. Learn from your mistakes and use it as fuel.

Best of luck my friend, i've got a background in Thai Boxing and had my first MMA class yesterday, my body is very, very sore. I haven't smoked a cigarette all year and the training still killed me.

@ trinitarian - I got into this sport at 42, 3 1/2 years ago. As you've probably figured out by now, 20 is alot different then 32. Make allowances for it during your recovery time. Things like ice baths and saunas will help alot. Take really good care of your muscles and joints. Lastly, don't forget about diet.. Its huge.

Good luck.
