Marco Ruas UFC 7

Did Marco Ruas use grease to help him win UFC 7? Remco Pardoel said that Ruas was greased and when I watch the tape he looks pretty slick in all of his fights. Just wondering.

Hahah...this was like two decades ago. I just remember him chopping down The Polar Bear with leg kicks...

Ya I know this is old, but I wasn't into UFC back in these days so I don't know a lot of the history. Now I love watching cards from the old days. Just hoping that someone who has been a fan longer than me could fill me in. Did the "King of the Streets" have a trick up his sleeve giving him an advantage against grapplers? And yes his fight against Polar Bear was awesome, grease or not he chopped Polar Bear down with awesome leg kicks.

The only thing I remember was that he was able to get out of chokes by turning his head inwards and leaving a small room to breathe. I always thought he was a bad ass. Never heard anything about greasing like Akiyama style...

Who knows I don't think it made a difference cuz back then it was very street like. Raw and gritty. We'd watch it on PPV and be pumped. Later on Tank and Vitor really blew up the scene with their vicious KOS. If you like Marco Ruas check out Pat Smith, Goodridge (sadly he has brain damage now), Don Frye vs Tank, Remco P., and then Frank Shamrock vs Tito. That was a classic! Frank was the first protypical MMA fighter in my mind next to Vitor.

Are you sure Goodridge didn't have brain damage to begin with? In his first UFC he claimed to be a arm wrestler who had beat 1000 men in 2 hours in Japan. Lol that's a pretty insane claim, but Big Daddy sure did have some great fights in the UFC! Here is a link to the interview on Sherdog where Remco P. talks about Marco Ruas using grease in UFC 7 if anyone is interested, it's a great interview and he talks about much more then just his right againts Ruas. It's an old interview but still a good read. Remco Pardoel is awesome.

Man it's been ages since I saw that footage of Remco beating Orlando. I mean ages ago...then I started remembering Keith Hackney, Harold Howard, Cal Worsham, Steve Jennum (alternate) who ended up beating Harold in the finals because Royce was too fatigued after battling against Kemo. Sad to say most fancy martial artists got schooled pretty badly. It's true what Remco said. Most are surviving for three rounds today. Back then there were barely any decisions. It was pure mayhem!

Thanks for the flashbacks!
