Smile Truth About Fighters And Crowds

First and foremost great site, I'm new to the site and love it. Very informative and colorful... full of opinions!

I just want to say that I had the opportunity to meet Cro Cop twice (airport and a hotel.) For a guy who was held up at the airport (don't ask... it's personal for him so I won't say) he came out 4 hours late and still took the time to take pictures and shoot the shit with us. It was amazing. The guy had a huge flight and here he comes and just like a regular guy just hangs out. His camp was nice enough to talk to us and just do the same, and hang out. He's humble and such a joker. On the way out one of the security guards asked who this person was (there was a small crowd of Croats around him... including myself ) and I said Cro Cop... the little barely speaking philipino woman went up to him and asked for a signature... hahah and with grace he signed the back of her jacket as "Dr. Who." hahaha... I met him at the hotel and honestly I felt bad for seeing again but hell, it's my idol. The man is being pulled left and right from media to fans to his Croatian community (there is a strong presence in Vancouver.) I understand being a fighter and athlete you gotta make time for people, but preparing for a fight you need rest and time... and poor guy wasn't (from what I've seen) getting too much. I hope fighters eventually realize that they should stick around after fights to make the autographs and chill with the fans.

I also met Chuck Lidell at the airport... Now Chuck looks in great shape and is a real genuine dude. I went up to him and asked for a picture he said okay... but my friend was too in shock so we waited a good 10 seconds and then a girl came rushing infront of me and asked for a autograph and took a picture with him... so shit theres me standing confused and like "crap no Chuck photo" and my buddy's still like "Wtf.... chuck lidell is infront of me." So I was kind of clingy to his shoulder cause I wanted that picture with him... and even though he was in a rush and his wife/girl was pulling him to go he took the time to take a picture.... awesome guy!

I also met Rich Franklin, great guy too but ... he seemed a little zoned out? He looks huge in the UFC game and tall but hell... I aint saying he's small he still could probably kick my ass.

I met Kampmann too... good guy... took a picture.... seems chill.

The UFC universe is awesome and I think that they should try to involve the fans a little more especially when it comes to a place it rarely comes to. It's great to see the fighters up close because it's like holy... I base my life around you and watch you on youtube and you're life story and read it and follow you.... and all in one bundle. I hope this post makes a impact (I doubt it - but you never know!) and changes the way fighters interact with fans, because we do gossip! I'd like to thank the fighters for being so nice and take the time of day. Like I said I realize they need time to prepare, but like I also said... after you're fights for a while stick around!!! You might get some free beers and make a bunch of people happy!

I met Dan Henderson once an honestly I was kinda dissapointed he isn't that friendly and and kinda seemed like he didn't have the time of day, gave the hey blah blah speel but really wasn't very approachable.

When I travel to an event, I make a point of staying in the same hotel that the organization is putting the fighters up in and make a point of hanging out in the lobby so that I can talk to people as they're hanging out, since they're usually spending some time there as the groups of training partners and coaches are getting together.

Most fighters are decent people. Most don't mind talking to fans or having their picture taken with them.

A lot of it, though, depends on when you catch them. Some guys are incredibly cool anytime except when they're cutting weight (Matt Lindland comes to mind; one of the nicest guys, but I stay out of his way when he's cutting weight) and some guys don't really speak English (Fedor, Werdum, Cris Cyborg; though, I speak some ghetto Portuguese, so I can talk to the latter two without much issue).

Still, I've gotta say, the coolest guys I've met are probably Arlovski (big time prankster, and has a very cool coaching staff that I've gotten to know pretty well), Brett Rogers (really likes Carl's Jr. at 3am, which makes for some fun conversations), Pat Miletich (hysterical guy, and knows his sh*t) and (believe it or not) Chael Sonnen, who I've hung with while Matt is cutting weight.

There are a lot of others, though. Those are just the four that stick out.

Has Matt ever suplexed anyone who bothered him while cutting weight?

I met Randy Couture when I was in Vegas for UFC 94. Took a Muay Thai class at his gym (Xtreme Couture) and he was there walking around, smiling, saying hi to people.
There was a grappling seminar that weekend and Jay Heron and Gray Maynard were conducting classes (I didnít get to watch too much as I had to try and make it through the MT class).

The conditioning was brutal (I hadnít trained in a while) but everyone at the school were pretty cool, no egos.

My friend took a photo of me and Randy afterwards, I felt like a dork because I didnít want to bother him (the place was very busy) but he seemed used to it.

I got the impression that Randy just likes what he does and has gotten comfortable with the attention and treats everyone with allot of class and humility. Iím not into hero worship or celebrity watching but it was kind of surreal to see him just casually walking around like a regular Joe.

I hope to do another trip to Vegas to train at Wandyís gym, Iíve head great things about it.
