The most overrated MMA fighter in history? Randy Couture.

I'm prepared for the blowback from this but hey, this is the smacktalk section so why not.
I have seen lists of the the Greatest of All Time fighters in MMA, and Couture's in everybody's Top 5, and I don't get it.
Bottom line, the guy is 18-10 over his career. Can you show me one boxer who is mentioned as the GOAT with a record like that?
Randy's an awesome guy and has alot of fan appeal and charisma, but 18-10 isn't the record of someone who should be mentioned as one of the all time greats.

You Missed.
Try again.

Randy Couture
- won the UFC HW title 3 times and defended it once
- won UFC LHW title 2 times
- hsa fought every great fighter in the game. He has faced the tougherst competition of it's time: Lidell, Belfort, Ortiz, Rendleman, Overeem, Rizzo, Barnett, Ricco, Sylvia, Gonzaga, Nog...
- all of his fights are exciting adn entertaining

I don't see where you got this idea that he is overrated.
Think again.
Here's something for you to read:

Good points, and don't get me wrong, I love the dude. I just have a hard time with any fighter with an 18-10 record being mentioned as one of the greatest of all time. I think he's a legend in the sport, but was at his prime when the sport was still evolving.

Here you go, in 22 carreer UFC fights, all but six there has been a title at stake. And if you dicount his early career and start counting after his first title shot it's only three. Not to mention the man started his carrer in his mid thirties and has no real insane natural ability or athleticism.

If you can find me someone else who has fought at that level and that competition for as long as he has then we can talk. But the conversation will be over when I ask if he's in his late 40's.

If Couture isnt great then who is?? what fighter has gotten anywhere near status as Couture. You mentioned he is a legend, well what makes someone a legend? He isnt a legend for no reason, he has been kicking ass for a long long time. when i first started watching ufc vhs tapes in the 90's the best fighter was Belfort, he was shocking everybody with his crazy striking wich had not been seen in MMA before that. He seemed extremely unbeatable wich is something most new mma fans dont understand because there are so many high level fighters now that anyone is beatable, but back then it wasnt like that. But in comes Randy Couture an older balding guy who nobody thought had a chance and he beats vitor in a shocking fashion. Fast forward and nearly the same situation with Lidell, he beats him in a way that no one thought possible, i mean liddel was in his prime and NOBODY could take him down, and NOBODY could withstand his striking. In comes old man Couture and beats his ass on the feet and manages to take him down multiple times. Same thing with Ortiz alot of people who are new to mma might not realize how highly regarded and feared Ortiz used to be, Randy tore him apart convincingly. Fast forward to Tim Sylvia, a guy who now is a joke but at that time seemed very hard to beat. Sylvia, in his last fights beat Arlovski, who was a BEAST at the time, i mean this guy was knocking everybody out, he also had beat monson who was unable to take him down the whole five rounds. Most fans believed Sylvia who tear through couture because he was so hard to take down and so much bigger than Randy, and hopefully anybody who is commenting on this thread has seen that fight, if they havent then they have no business commenting. Anyway to put it simply this guy has been beating top contenders ass for years and who knows, maybe he has a couple of shocks still left in him. You can never count him out.

First of all the UFC is full of top of the food chain MMA fighters, there is no easy fights in the UFC at all and it only takes 1 mistake and your beat. So to compare records with boxers who only maybe have 6-7 top class fights to there name is just idiotic.

The average world class boxer has about 30 tune up fights against complete bums and then they have 6-7 fights against top class fighters and then retire, there records are pointless , really if you only count there fights against good opponents most of them would be like 4-2, 3-4 etc.

Randy maybe 18-10 but they are all against the best fighters in the world at that time and people who out weigh him by 50lbs+. Thats why he is one peoples favourite fighters ever.

Most records mean nothing when half of the fights are against cans. Randy's fought some tough battles.
I think most people rate Couture up there because of his:

Achievements
UFC 13 Heavyweight Tournament Winner
UFC Heavyweight Championship (3 times)
UFC Light Heavyweight Championship (2 times)
Interim UFC Light Heavyweight championship (1 time)
First fighter to hold Championship titles in two weight classes

Records
Most Championship reigns in UFC history (6 times)
Most Championship fights in UFC history (15 times)
Oldest fighter to win a title in UFC history (43 years, 255 days)

Legacy
UFC Hall of Famer
2x Fight of the Night Honors

This sport is still young, there will be more great fighters who will fight well into their old age and also leave an amazing footprint when they're done. Think of how Gordie Howe was considered 'the greatest' of hockey with records many thought may be unbeatable at the time, then Orr and Gretzky eventually came along to share the throne. Right now Couture is our Howe.
