i don't know the guy- my point was that local promotions have as much relevance to the UFC as a local tennis league does to wimbledon. i dont doubt his intentions or love for the sport, i was just questioning that particular statement.

Everybody good, plenty of slaves for my robot colony?

That's not really a valid comparison. There's no legal opposition to tennis. There's no politician that favors the banning or censoring of tennis.

If there was, and if local organized tennis tournaments were run with the malicious intent to potentially injure ill-equipped competitors, that political opposition would make a point of addressing the issue.

Of course, that's an outlandish hypothetical, but my intention was really to demonstrate that your analogy didn't quite work in the context of the statement.

I see your differentiation, that local promotions are of a different caliber than the upper echelon of the sport. But the reality is, there's a certain level of competence required to make that differentiation.

There are people that think (or thought) that the Kimbo Slice videos represented mixed martial arts. And that reflected badly on the sport.

Hosting cards like this will just cheapen MMA's creditibility. Imagine if they were any first time viewers of MMA in the audience! What do you think their impressions of the glorious sport would be. And then if they go to the event, see a fight like that, and receive a wrong impression of Mixed Martial Arts, what will they tell their friends? And then what will their friends tell their friends?

And one of the most terrible things about the fight, was not only that Spongebob was beaten up bad, but as you mentioned, the annoncer made fun of him?

I'll try and make a comparison here:

It's like an unpopular kid at school is not accepted into any groups of friends at school, until one finally accepted him. And then, the one that he is accepted into, constantly rips on him.

But I don't think the above comparison does any justice to how terrible this situation is.

Good article, by the way, nice read.
I'm sorry you got teased at school man. Hope you feel better about it some day

j/k

I agree entirely, its sick when you let people participate in sports when they suck. I mean they should not even have that choice, they should only be able to watch it. So many times in back yards or high school football fields I see these small, weak, out of shape people trying to play sports when they suck. They are clearly over matched and its only a matter of time until they get seriously hurt, how dare they enjoy a sport they suck at. I mean why do they feel they have the right to do something they enjoy when they suck at it? Its like seeing a person with very little skills, training or professional lessons driving a fast car on a pay per play track, makes me sick people enjoying freedom to do as they like.

Well with out the sarcastic tone I have to agree.. I would disagree if this was labeled as a professional fight now granted if this guy is not mentally fit and they are letting him fight that is a different story. but its like an any amateur sport.. you will have people that out right suck.. and those that excel and eventually go Pro. now if this promotion keeps doing shows like this and touts crappy fighters as legitimate.. they will not be around long.. then there will be nobody who will allow this guy to fight.

None of the dangers of those sports are comparable to the dangers of MMA if done wrong.

a) Spongebob is a retard. If no one else will let you fight, and you are 0-11 and you still choose to fight, and not train, you not only accept anything that happens to you, IMO you deserve it.
b) That gym and that fighter are pussies. Thats not what mma is all about, beating up some 0-11 fighter and then acting like a bad ass.
c) i have no problem with spongebob fighting, as long as it is sanctioned and determined as a fair fight(someone with similar experience, record, etc..) if you cant find someone with a record like that, he shouldnt fight.
d) I really hope that the outcry from this article is enough to get these promotion and gym put out of business because they are awful for the sport.
