Moving Towards Title, Daley Will Skip Most Exciting Matchups

Paul Daley (23-8-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is one of the three most explosive strikers in the UFC welterweight division and on the fast track to a shot at Georges St. Pierre (19-2 MMA, 13-2 UFC, #1 IWMMAR). With two huge stoppages over solid UFC fighters, Daley is going to be looking at two or three more wins before he steps in for a title shot.

While his countryman Dan Hardy (24-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC, #5 IWMMAR) is fighting for the title, and there’s bound to be some (warranted) discussion of his missing weight in his last fight, Daley is still on the fast track to a title shot. He’s stopped two respectable UFC prospects in the first round, which means a matchup with a gatekeeper (Matt Hughes) or another potential title contender (Jon Fitch or Josh Koscheck).

The problem is that these aren’t the matchups that we, as fans, should be most excited about. They’re the best matchups for advancing Daley’s roll as a title contender, but it’s common knowledge that Daley’s takedown defense is fallible and his ability to work off of his back is limited.

buckeyefighter has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I dont believe that Semtex should be considered a serious title contender just because he has a 2 fight win streak. He has great hands, anyone can see that. but how will he fare when Fitch, or Kos take him to the ground? and as for chalenging Matt Hughes, i dont think semtex would have a chance against the future hall of famer. Hughes has some of the best takedowns MMA has ever seen and semtex would be on his back b4 the 2 min mark. Lets wait till he has at least five fights in the UFC before we start throwing him up against GSP.
