Tips?

I'm new here and thought it'd be interesting to make a thread like this. I don't know if its been made before or anything.

But I personally am trying to start a professional career in MMA sometime in the future and I have just started training. I was wondering if there are other people who are just like me interested in this as a career choice, too.

For the people interested, they obviously want to know what to do and what not to and how to keep on their toes. I was reading the technique area a little bit and that wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

So why not create a thread for MMA tips, when like... cage fighting and such. Tips like "Stay focus and AIM FOR THE HEAD" or something.

I'm with you mate, just starting off and trying to make it pro. I'm a late bloomer so to say though as I'm 22. I've just been watching alot of fights it will help.

First tip without trying to come across as a smartass...

Make time to go to school and get a degree. The chances of making enough of an income to support yourself, much less a family, plan for retirement, etc.. in this sport are very, very little from a statistical standpoint.

Chase your dreams, but also plan for the future and build a safety net for the unexpected. There are alot of unplanned things that can happen in life, some good, some bad.

I agree greatly with the post above. School should be your number one priority. That is something you can always fall back on. Making it big in MMA is extremely difficult.. It is not impossible though. Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it if its really what you want to pursue.

That is probably the best advice anyone can give you. As for the more practical tips, here are 3 obvious ones:

1. A fight is won on the training ground. You don't win a fight because you're 'talented', you win it by practicing hours and hours.
2. Stay humble. Even though you train with a starter, you can learn something from anyone, anywhere at any time.
3. Make your homework before a fight: know you opponent. What is his background? did he practice another martial arts before MMA? What are his favourite techniques? What are his weaknesses?

I know it's basic, but in my opinion these things are most important... (After getting a degree and a backup plan)

Everybody wants be a fighter including myself. I have the opportunity because I know show promoters and they've asked me to, BUT...and this is a big BUT...I know my level isn't even CLOSE to that. It would only be a self fulfilling goal at this point in my career which is to fight for fun, win then retire undefeated. No bullshit...lolz! Even if I were 18 again I'm sure I'd fight, but I'm not sure I'd make a career out of it. I've played competitive sports and the jump from Varsity to collegiate to PRO are three different leagues. Oh and to become champ is yet another step above. Just look at these champs from other organizations Jorge Santiago, Aoki, Fireball Kid, Demian Maia (huge surge in the beginning who shot up to contendership and is fledgingly now and this is a WORLD CLASS BJJ expert), all the TUF winners, and so on. Once they enter the UFC and I'm sure that's your goal...they soon realize what they are TRULY UP AGAINST. Simply the best of the best.

In the span of 10 years this sport has grown tremendously. By 2020 you're looking at kids who already started at the age of eight years old who then would be 18 and ready to turn pro. They've cross trained and have been molded to become FIGHTING MACHINES.

My advice is to hit up the board members on here who have fought; Gland, Kamikaze (Bellator), Xeberus, etc.

My tip is if you havnt trained before then get a few months under your belt. It may not take that long tho. Just jumping in it will just get your pride crushed haha.

Here are just three tips for MMA.
Train high/Low:
Most people can not recover from more than two days of intense training per week. Follow heavy workouts with one or two lower-intensity training sessions before you go heavy again.
Minimize stress:
It is harmful to your mental and physical health. Research shows it can severely hamper fat loss as well as muscle gain, so try to relax.
Less is more:
Doing too many exercises in a program is not a good way to improve at any of them. Instead, stick to the basics they work. And when it comes to different types of lifts, use no more than eight to 10 in a given training week.
