info on the history or legends behind muay thai

can someone shed some light on gods or the legends behind muay thai? ive seen characters and tattoos (e.g. gilbert yvel) that seem to have some relevence in muay thai, but cant seem to find too much information or images on them...ive only learned that ancient and traditional muay thai practitioners have tattoos that they believe will protect and give them strength in the ring...i find this topic very interesting and would like to learn more...images are always a plus!

hey, thanks for the page, but ive already covered that...i guess i should have been more specific when posting the request...

im more specifically looking for images or pictures of the gods that correlate somehow with muay thai...the reason for this is because im looking for designs somewhere along the lines of gilbert yvel's for a tattoo, but i dont want to be ignorant and get something that makes no sense or just because it looks good...i want to fully understand the meaning and beliefs behind it/them...

e.g. what is the significance of the warriors that float up crotching on one knee with their arms up as if to present something? again, for an example, these warriors can be seen on gilbert yvels chest...things like that...i would like to know the background and meaning before i get inked...

Well... To be honest, that is a very broad question/topic to address. The reason being is this:

Muay Thai is the national sport of Siam/Thailand, and has existed for almost a full millenia. It is so engrained into Thai culture that over 90% of all males who've grown up in Thailand have practiced/trained in Muay Thai at some point in their lives. It is more Thai, than Baseball is "American."

So if you are looking into Legends or Symbols that are based in Muay Thai, you would actually be looking for identifiable symbols that are inherint in Thai culture over all. Many of which are Dharmic in nature and come from Hindu/Bhuddist sources. Many of the names given to techniques found in Muay Boran (the predecessor art of Muay Thai) refer to either religious or historic sources.

On that note, it might be easier to look into historical, religious, or folklore information from Thailand to find out what you might want to get a Tat from. I know that elephants, and tigers are popularly revered animals. You also have many mythological figures like Vishnu, Krishna, Hanuman and the like to choose from also. There's a plethora of things that you could probably look into.

I hope that helps.
