New to Muay Thai

Hey Everyone

Im really new to muay-thai. Ive only had 3classes but i absolutely love it. After getting over the initial full body stiffness(ouch) i feel like im getting used to it....ie hip movement,pivoting and striking via punches and kicks. I am just looking for advice on how often to train if you really want to become good at it...at the mo ive went every 2nd day.....also should i be weight training along with muay thai....im 5'11'' n 160lbs....any tips or info would be great

No you shouldn't be weight training. Muay thai fighters need quick muscles to move fast, not big ones. This will also cause some stiffening of your muscles and body, and slow you down. Rather than weight training I would be running a lot, 4-6 kms a day if you can.

As far as how often to train, the professionals here in Thailand train 2-3 hours a day, twice a day, but obviously that is something you will have to work up to and not try and do straight away. Good luck and train hard.

i think a routine like Bas Rutten's workout would be much more effective than just running.

You can train in ways to increase your endurance and strength without adding bulk. Calisthenics are a good bet. Or anything with low to medium weight and high reps should do it.

this is virtually complete bs, running is good advice and gaining muscle mass will cause your cardiovascular system to be taxed more as the bigger your muscles are the more oxygen they will need to do the same 'time' of effort.
But muscles don't make you slow or ponderous, that is basically the Martial Arts equivalent of an old wives tale
and even if larger muscles did have negative impacts on your martial abilities, you can lift weights to improve strength or endurance without specifically targeting hypertrophy

I would wait until your body is as accustomed to the martial arts training as you can before taking up the weights tho
