question about kicks

last class I attended we spent the last ten minutes of class with partners and kick shields. The partner put the shield anywhere he wanted and we had to kick where ever it was. And while that was going on, I was introduced to the teep kick.

now the question : when doing it, do you just kick straight forward (sort of like spartan kick in 300?) or is there more to it? any extra technique or the like?

The what?

The kick in the 300 looked like a push kick to me.

A teep kick is used to keep distance, or to setup combos. There is more to a teep then kicking straight forward. You should ask your instructor how to execute a proper teep. There are probably tutorials on youtube about teeps.

when we were doing it, we did started out kick practicing and our instructor left. he had to help the gym head train. we were being watched by the other instructor, but he was doing a fitness kickboxing class. My partner who has been doing it for years didnt correct me when i did it, so i might have been doing it right, but just pictured it differently than what i was doing. And looking at this video it looks like a more practiced version of what i was doing. what i was doing was using my whole foot instead of just the toes like in the videp

Use the ball of your foot and rock your hips forward. This is where the power comes from. I'm still perfecting my technique on this also. I've sparred with people who are very good with this kick and get tooled almost every time. There are counters however

the only reason he left the area we were training in was to help give advice and criticize the gym owners training. it was before he had a fight and needed last minute help. and it was only for about five minutes.
