Question Reducing pain in shins from kicking?

I recently started taking Muay Thai classes and I cannot get enough of it! I purchased a 100lb heavy bag so I can practice a bit at home, but man, those leg kicks hurt!

I am about as new to practicing MMA as one could get, never was a sports guy. But even one solid kick to the heavy bag just kills my shins, so much so that one painful kick is enough to mentally block me from going all out on more kicks. I am curious what I can do to reduce the pain of these kicks.

I am not sure if it's because I am new, and similar to the muscle ache you get when first weight lifting after a long time, that you just need to power through the initial phase with constant kicks until the nerves just wear down a bit (Only been doing this for a few weeks now, and I've focused more on striking/knees/elbows due to shin pain).

So that's basically my question, not sure if this comes with the territory when practicing this or if maybe my form is off? Would one suggest very light kicks to get it going, or just going all out and taking the pain. Or if this is abnormal and it must be something to do with my form.

Again to verify, I am using a 100lb heavy bag, though I am only 150lb's on a good day, 5"10 in height. Maybe I just got a bag that's to heavy?


EDIT: Also to note, its kicking the low parts of the bag (the heavier part obviously) that tends to really hurt. Feels like I'm kicking a brick wall. When i go for higher kicks at the top, it stings a bit sure but it's not a "kicking a wall" type of pain. Maybe I should practice higher kicks? Or lower the bag so I'm kicking the softer area, and pretty much ignoring the heavier bottom? I love working on the heavy bottom when doing my striking, so it would be a shame to have to lower/raise this heavy bag depending on what type of striking I want to do.

I will tell you this mate,

if you aren't in pain from kicking the bag something is wrong if you are just starting out on your road to conditioning your shins.

When you're working on the bag don't worry about the pain so much. Take this with a bit of salt though if you strike wrong then there is cause for concern...but if you are striking and then hesitating then why are you doing this?

This may be blunt, but you have to answer a simple question can you handle pain if no then why are you choosing to study Muy Thai or get into the MMA scene?

Your absolutely right. Mainly I was just curious if I was doing it right. If I heard the pain shouldn't be a major factor, or if the pain was a result to improper form, I'd just rather know early on to be sure I'm not doing something wrong. My right leg is all sorts of jacked up from old non MMA injuries, so I'm only really hesitant on that particular leg when kicking. Everything else is tolerable. Really the hesitation was just kicking with full force until I got a little feedback that the pain was normal. But yeah I mainly got into it just because of a passion I have watching it, and was curious If I could do it. Knowing now that the shin pain is inevitable I'll rest a little easier when throwing those kicks. I appreciate the feedback and certainly love blunt replies, no need to sugar coat any advice I ask for

Ever tried kicking with shin guards¿

Pain is normal in the beginning. Without shin guards kick at a level of force where you just can take the pain so you can continue to throw the next kick. Have a good warm up before kicking. While kicking, try not to think too much about the pain as that will focus your attention on it and thereby you feel it more. Put some loud music on and maybe think of someone you really dislike so you mind gets distracted and your adrenaline level gets raised which serves as a natural pain killer. Over the next weeks you can then gradually raise the intensity of kicking.

@ Bluelander

Are you hitting with the right part of your shin consistently? you should be hitting on the the top 4-6 inches of your shin that is a little flat below your knee? Also make sure you are turning your hip over.

If the answer is yes continue with your bag at home. If the answer is no, quit the home training for awhile and spend some time with an instructor or experienced students to fix your technique. If you don't do this and continue to work out at home, you will end up developing bad habits that will need to be fixed later.

The pain in the shins is an innevitability. It will hurt every time you throw a kick until the nerves are deadened. Assuming you throw kicks every day, it'll be about 6 months to a year before it stops hurting completely. But even then it will still sting when you check a kick, or get checked, but the pain will be marginal at best.

The stinging pains are just one part of the pains any dedicated fighter has to deal with, the others being arthretic symptoms in the bones and joints, and muscle aches.

The pain will go down after awhile and you'll eventually get used to it, so it wont hurt as much. Just massage the shit of of those suckers until you can't take it anymore...trust me you'll get used to it and learn to enjoy the pain as sick as that sounds

Take this with an absolute grain of salt but I have heard in the past people lightly hitting their shins with wooden rolling pins to kill the nerves. It takes time but I am sure its better then "kicking a brick wall" lol

Haha no worries, as 'sick as it sounds' it's actually very logical. I appreciate the input, like I said I wanted to ask around rather then just assume I was doing everything A-OK

I am pretty confident I am kicking with proper form, just didn't know if kicking a 100lb heavy bag at full force with my little chicken legs on my 150lb body was a good idea. Really didn't know what size bag to get, and when checking this one out in the store I gave it a few medium power punches and it seemed to swing pretty well, so I figured that'd be a good sized bag to use.


Thanks Intermission! I've actually heard that from several users on this forum, so It couldn't hurt (no pun intended) to do that while sitting around

Again thanks for the rep buddy! Jumped me up from 1 square to a whole damn row! Skipped the foreplay and got right down to it :-P If there's anything I can do to return the courtesy just ask
