Not familiar with Lin at all. Is there *any* truth at all in what Mayweather is ( crudely ) saying? As in, is Lin a truly special player or is any of the attention hes getting because he's Oriental? I'm assuming successful oriental players are not common in the NBA, right?

Educate me, my colonist brethren.

Technically Folyd is right. This is lin against my home team, the areana was filled with oriental that night. Lin is the only asian dude in nba history that was not a freak ( yao ming) to be good. People love him for the sotry, but the chinese community is backing him just like any other race would do when one of their own is succeeding.

In Europe, the big football clubs sometimes buy reasonably skilled Oriental/Asian players for one reason: They sell a shit load of shirts in Asia. Whenever an Asian footballer does well in Europe, they go mad for it in their home countries. And I mean MAD. Millions of shirt sales and club memorabilia get sold off the back of it. Because of this, the clubs then publicise and play those players a little more then they would if it was based purely on skills alone. If an Asian player was to come along who was truly world class, ( as it seems Lin is ) he would be gold dust, and rightfully receive a LOT of publicity. Far more then any other world class players in his team. I don't really see a problem with it. When a particular race, who are rarely feature in top level sport, produce a star... it should be celebrated. It *is* a big deal. Ultimately, characters like Lin help to change attitudes.

Yes it's partly because he is Asian, no doubt about that, but to simply reduce it as such takes away credit.

Fact: (not really): 75% of players are black.
Fact: 90% of good players are black
Fact: There are no Asian-American players in the NBA besides Lin
Fact: NYC is the media capital of the world

Those are facts (kinda because I made up the %), so he has a point but I do not believe it's the only reason for his success. First of all the kid has talent, came out of no where, provided a spark that made everyone else on the Knicks team better, has been consistent for 2 weeks putting up numbers that are all star (20 ppg, 7-8 assists pg, 2 steals pg). He was undrafted and bounced from a few teams all unnoticed (or not given the chance possibly because he is Asian).

He has a great story, and brings excitement. If he was black would he get as much exposure? No, not because of racism but because there are already tons of talented black players (the majority). Whenever something out of the ordinary happens, people take notice. He also has a large Asian fan base.

A good example of something out of the ordinary is Nate Robinson. Nate is listed as 5'8 which is really short for NBA standards, yet is one of the most athletic guards out there. He is popular not because he is black, but popular because he can dunk on 7 footers with sass. He is noticed because he is out of the ordinary so people root for him. Same with Lin.

EDIT: Mayweather is a joke, and everything that comes out of his mouth is inflamatory. He is talented as a boxer without a doubt, but he should stick to his area of expertise. Sounds to me like he has a chip on his shoulders.

EDIT: Theauger is right on the money - I agree 100% rep.

Lin is a story not because of his nationality but because in one week he went from a no name guy who couldn't play a minute to a guy that lead the Knicks to 7 straight wins whilst playing like the best player at his position.

Any player that does what Lin just did would get massive attention.

if mayweather couldn't box he would be living below the poverty line.

i'm sick of seeing people who were genetically blessed with athleticism feel like they have some sort of self entitlement. as if the world owes him something.

the fact is he's one of the best boxers of all time, yet a complete dumb ass. i think that's apparent in his comments, his attitude, and overall perspective on life. it's obvious he's ignorant as **** and talks too much. as if the average person with an iq over 70 couldn't quickly debunk his stupid comments and theories? common please. what's sick are the mayweather fan boys who seem to idolize someone of his stature. sure he's one of the best. but what's the point in liking someone who is so athletically gifted yet so ignorant and ******* retarded?

i hope he turns out like tyson and goes bankrupt. he's a piece of shit. charisma and trash talking has always been a part of the boxing community and i accept that. however, mayweather just doesn't do it in style. it's classless and racist. i'm glad dana shed some light on this, i think people with a more active role in the media should put these type of people on blast.

That's the thing about Folyd, without his mouth he would never be this big. His skills are amazing but its his mouth that makes him so successful. Its like the sonnen effect, btw mike tyson is one of the most racist sob ever. But everybody loves mike its crazy, dana even loves mike.

oh and yeah dipshit, he IS ASIAN. he's the first asian american in the NBA, and that's sorta a big deal. as dana said, he's also smashing records and went from being a call up almost sent back to the d-league, to posting allstar caliber numbers. that's the type of shit that makes sports ENTERTAINING. stop being a hater, it's ******* disgusting.

Lin broke an NBA record for most points through first 5 starts. Knicks also was underachieving with an 8-15 record with 2 "superstars." Both of them get injured and Lin is a few days from being cut but thrown in because of an injury situation, and all of a sudden Knicks win 7 in a row with him putting up historic numbers. This was a guy going from about to find a job outside of sports to suddenly leading the biggest sports market in the U.S. on an incredible run.

It's a feel good story. This is not making news because Lin is Asian by the way, it's because this is New York and they try to shove everything down our necks. When New York has 5 inches of snow they put that on the headlines of network tv...

The people who are discrediting Lin because he is Asian--surprise! can't list a single example of someone who has done what he has done in NBA history, regardless of race.

i dont see mayweathers comments as racist, is see them as factual correct.

imo its no coincidence, that the ufc are doing their first asian show and whtie´s remarks. White is throwing mayweather under the bus, to come of as the good guy in asia. He knows where the the gravy train stops next, douchebag move but busninesswise rather smart.

F#ck Mayweather. He's over rated and a defensive player. His offense is garbage and hes boring. Hes also an idiot, scum in the ring, not that his personal life matters to the sport, I dont need athletes to be role models I have parents for that. I look to what an athlete can do with their craft. Hes great at defense which means sitting around blocking and dodging if you like that thing, and yes I am purposefully simplifying it because I hate a points fighter that is afraid to engage unless he has an overwhelming advantage in one aspect or another.

Real top notch fighters will get in there even when its not totally safe and put their a$$ on the line, having to trust in their full game. You wont see Pac dodging someone, even if he knows he has a problem with that guy like in the case of Marquez.

Just shut the f#ck up Floyd and make the fight.

Mayweather is full of himself. He called a radio station once and started calling out the radio host who is known for being controversial and the radio host was putting Money in his place. Then when Money couldn't win a war of words he started saying "I bet your not black." the guy was like what the F does that have to do with anything? The radio host called him out by saying "When in dought, play the race card!" It was the funniest thing I ever heard. I think they took it off of youtube. When Money started saying I'm undefeated!! the radio host said Ali wasn't undefeated and he's 100 times the fighter you are.
It was great!! I'm sorry for not knowing the show's name or name of the host. It doesn't matter if Money fights King Kong next, if its not Pacman I don't give a SH**!!JMO

There is some truth to what Floyd said. Even the main stream media have articles on Lin and the impact he will have on the image of Asian American males, how big he is in Asia and so on..

While Floyd doesn't have the credibility to speak on such an issue you can't dismiss it as false.

I personally think Lin is an awesome player and brings some much needed excitement to the NBA. I usually don't watch regular season games unless it's Miami or Lakers. Lin changed that.

Some of the hype is based on his journey to the NBA but a lot of it is based on his racial background. He is an anomaly and that's huge. I'm a minority so I have an idea on what Lin means to his people. There is nothing to hate about him. The media on the other hand is out of control.

There is also a growing basketball fan base in Asia. Why WOULDNT you make it a big deal? Its an untapped market, it makes sense.

Atleast there is a rationale behind linsanity as oppose to tebow madness. Hes actually performing!!! It's justified! Also if you've noticed lately the media LOVES clinging onto stories like this. U saw it with Bret farve, with tebow and now with Lin. The media has a huge part in this. Especially espn who likes to turn stories into a gossip column.

He had the best first four starts in NBA history, that puts him above guys like Jordan, Shaq, Lebron, and Magic in that catagory. I dont think people being impressed with that qualifies as easily impressed. I dont get the impression you know that much about basketball.
