I've been looking at the final card for the upcoming PPV event in Brazil, and I honestly think it may be the worst PPV ever (at least on paper). This honestly should be a TUF Finale event on free TV, and the TUF finale from this past weekend was arguably a better card.
The main event is Rich Franklin vs Wanderlei Silva. Yes, two old has-beens who may retire after this event are battling it out in a fight that we've already seen, and that nobody wants to see. As if it wasn't irrelevant enough, the fight takes place at a 190 pound catchweight. And this is the MAIN EVENT...
After that, we have the co-main event of - brace yourselves - Fabricio Werdum vs Mike Russow. It could be an entertaining fight, but in terms of relevance it's not like either guy is going to be a champion anytime soon.
The main card is rounded out with the two final fights from the two different weight classes on TUF Brasil, and some random featherweight bout between Brazilian UFC newcomers. And did I mention that the ENTIRE prelim card consists of losers from TUF Brasil?
Somebody please explain to me why this is a PPV and not a TUF: Brasil finale show on free television. Also, does anybody expect this to sell more than 100K PPVs? WTF :confused02:
Weak, but they've had comparably bad ppvs on overseas cards. 120 was close, bisping vs akiyama main event, two fringe top 10ers, and hardy vs condit co main ... Not bad but not exactly a title eliminator or anything close to it.
119 was even worse, Mir vs crocop, Mir was miles out of the title picture and crocop just sucked at this point. Lil nog vs bader co main, two weakish fringe top tenners just like russow and werdum. The fights actually sucked when they played out too, which made it even worse.
PPV worthy = name value and big meaningful fights this does not have that so it is not a PPV worthy card. HOWEVER that doesn't mean it wont be good, come on Wand vs franklin will be awesome but all I can say I'm glad I get this for free on TV as I wouldn't pay for this card.
With 7-8 spectacular events in a row, why do we always feel it necessary to get on the UFC's nuts when the odd stinker comes along? Putting on as many PPVs and shows as they do, it's bound to happen once in a while. And it seems we're always so damn eager to jump on and rip apart the sport and brand we all claim to love.
If it isn't PPV worthy, then it's simple: don't order it on PPV. Stream it for free. Go and see it in a bar with friends for free. Just please quit with all of the whining. Some of you act as though you're entitled to non-stop names and stacked cards. You act as though the UFC 'owes' you, because you're fans of the sport. What you fail to realize is that the UFC is a business. It makes you an offer by providing you with events and PPVs to purchase. In the end, the choice is yours whether or not you accept that offer and fork over your cash.
If it's not PPV worthy, fine. Don't buy it. No one is putting a gun to your head. There are plenty of past and future shows that will make up for one perceived 'flop'. Short sightedness plagues this generation.
Even more shocking considering the UFC is on the decline as far as buys and ratings goes...probably due to aformentioend awful cards like Mir-Cro Cop and this is the type of garbage that will continue the downward spiral at 60 bucks a pop.
2012 has been an awful year for MMA in general, with all the steroids nonsense, lackluster cards, and lack of championship fighters being healthy....it's a down year for sure...probably one of the worst since I started watching MMA.
UFC 146 might be one of the best cards until the winter and even that card wasn't particularly great once Overeem went out and the main event became a predictable bore.
I think it's worth the PPV price, but maybe the UFC can avoid a PPV failure (meaning financially) and give the event to FOX? If that will generate them more revenue?
I've seen better regional cards than this event...and typically better action if all you care to see is aggressive fighters with no defense scoring finishes...
Well I could've gone on about why they can't do such things, but I didn't feel like it...if that's not good enough for you, do some research. Problem solved.
Funny thing, going back to my whole regional circuit thing, take Wanderlei, Werdum and Rich off and this card is virtually undistinguable from a high profile Jungle Fight card.
Hell, this card looks like Walid Ismael and Dana White put together a last minute co-promotion....only on PPV of course.
Main card
UFC 24
Jens Pulver vs. David Velasquez
Bob Cook vs. Tiki Ghosn
Dave Menne vs. Fabiano Iha
Lance Gibson vs. Jermaine Andre
Tedd Williams vs. Steve Judson
Even with Randleman in Judson's place it's a horrible card.
Yeah, based on the card I'll not bother buying this PPV. Looking forward to UFC 148 much more at this point.
