This past weekend Strikeforce heavyweight-grand-prix champion Daniel Cormier signed a new contract that paves his way to the UFC.
Now, Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 SF) just has to beat Dion Staring (28-7 MMA, 0-0 SF) at Strikeforce's final event, which takes place Jan. 12 on his alma mater's home turf....
I always wanted him to be thhe guy to go against Jon Jones over JDS, but if JDS gets through Cain and Overeem, it's just an opening with no challengers what so ever ahead of him. Cormier might just be the guy to put in that place. It could be good to see Cormier fight a lower level UFC HW first, and then see how JDS' title situation plays out to decide where he wants to go. Great addition to the roster though, time to see how he matches up in the big league.
He doesn't need punching power, I'm convinced he's a sadist who purposely tries to hurt folks, so his style suits him perfectly with his elbows and his knee kicks and standing chokes and his fancy spinning shit.
I don't know, Cormier is a stud and has skills for sure but he nearly died due to a weight cut in the Olympics and I believe that was a cut to 211 lbs, obviously he'll diet down but when you have a near fatal weight cut I'm not willing to trust you in later rounds. He's been a beast at Heavyweight but that is a massive fact I just can't over look, maybe I'm blowing it out of proportion but I really think he should fight someone before Bones just to see how he handles the cut and how effective he can utilize his skills.
He also has a 71 inch reach which means he'll have to get in Bones face and that will require energy.
Mir or maybe Nelson could be a fun fight too. I really like Nelson, win or lose. Out of the cage he's all about boring fights and getting the W, but once that door shuts, he's always bringing it.
Please Cormier make this fight happen. This is where I place a nice lil bet as he'll be the major under dog against the LHW title holder. Oh it would be so nice!
Cormier is in a weird spot. Cain is champ, and LHW is somewhat crowded. I think Cormier should have to win at least one LHW fight before getting a title shot. Or he could wait for Cain to eventually lose the belt considering that usually HW fighters don't hold onto it for too long.
