I hate when I can't see what a fight was selling from the start. Inthis case, the clash of wrestling vs bjj between two top dogs in their arts. Sucks. Good strategy for Davis, though.
I like Davis. Seems like a nice guy with an awesome personality and I'm glad he won. But he has GOT to mix up his game a little more. So robotic. No fluidity, terrible at setting up takedowns and virtually any kind of offense. He has all the physical tools he just needs to work on putting everything together.
It's funny how some people are hating on Davis for not finishing Vinny considering before this fight, a lot of people were saying that Vinny was the superior striker. Give Phil this win and don't nit pick so much. He clearly needs to work on his striking still, but at least he is improving a little. He kept that jab out consistently and it paid off. Vinny had nothing for him and has a lot to work on if he wants to succeed in MMA. BJJ and some kicks only get you so far.
I admit I said I thought Vinny MIGHT out strike him if he got aggressive. He even said on the lead up that he needs to be aggressive....and he wasn't.
Phil seemed to have thrown more hands than his usual kick from range approach. He is still an awful striker with overrated BJJ. He will beat his share of guys, but I don't really care for his fighting. I think Bader would beat him.
I hate it ... everytime 2 guys that are good on the ground collide we see a stand up fight , witch is stupid in my opinion .. ffs its not a trick anymore to use stand up as gameplan agaisnt a ground guy , everybody knows this now .. so throw your fking body on him and do what you do best ... its just stupid now , work on boxing when you fight a striker not a wrestler or a jiujitsu guy ffs... everybody does this now and its stupid now ...
It's not strategy. They struggle to take each other down, control the ground positions or lock in a sub because they are both too good at each other's strengths. Two grapplers/wrestlers collide, they end up putting together nothing against the cage or separating and striking.
It sucks, but Davis did the right thing for his career in UFC. He would be finished by Vinny if he went to the ground and he knows that very well. Vinny needs to materialize some striking ability asap, since he is unable to put good wrestlers to the mat.

I wouldn't expect Davis to hop in there with a high level BJJ black belt when he has a clear striking advantage. That's gameplanning 101. Davis played it smart.
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being Ryan Couture's striking and 10 being you-know-who's, I'd say Phil has gone from a 3.5-4 last time I saw him to a 5.5-6. That's a pretty big improvement. Especially considering there are only a handful of fighters in the UFC who are above an 8.
Yeah, Davis still needs to work hard on his striking, but at least he's not the worst striker at 205 anymore. Baby steps I guess. Good win for him and it shows that he's at least improving, regardless of the pace.
