today at my muay thai class a new guy showed up and at the end of the class we did a sit up excercise where a pair of 2 ppl sit up at the same time and touch hands when u r up. the new guy picked me as my partner. he was able to complete about 12 or maybe 13 situps to failure. while i was waiting for him toward my 30th sit up it was obvious that i was stronger. but after the class he took off his shirt and had a six pack which i still do not have a six pack and am trying to get. the question is how does he have a six pack if he is the same height and about medium built as me and i am able to complete more sit ups y dont i have a six pack and keep in mind that i have been eating very little food and i am down to 9% body fat

First off, you probably are not 9% bf if you have no abs. You get abs about 10ish.

Every single normally functioning human being has ABdominal muscles.
Many people seem to think that just because someones ab muscles are visible this implies superior strength to those without abs.

The human body changes all the time, his metabolism rate may be superior to yours thus having the ability to burn more fat quicker than yourself.
Ane xample of this being my brother who eats junk food constantly throughout the day, smokes, drinks everything yet hes skinnier than myself and older than myself even though i train.
Just watch the world strongman competitions.... not one of those guys has a visible sixpack.

What kind of crap is that have you ever wrestled, BJJ, and boxing? People under 140 are 5-8% body fat and half of them don't have 6 pack abs. Most likely if your over 160 pounds and 9% body fat you will have 6 pack abs.

Except the world's dominant strongman for the last 4-5 years, Marius Pudzianowski:

Worlds Strongest Man - The Strongest Man in the World!

But he is an exception- a freak, really. All of the other guys who compete successfully in that sports are at least a little chunky and fat round the middle. Every now and then you get a body-builder type with a ripped physique (usually from North America) and they always do abysmally.

Short answer: there are lots of amdoninal muscles. One thin, flat muscle lies on top of the other much bigger ones. If it is well-developed and you have low body fat it becomes visible and is then called a "six pack". It's probably less than 10% of the total abdominal muscle mass. So you can have a six pack but not have strong abs, if you are not working the other 90%.

Strength of abdominals and having a six pack are two completely different things. If you do lots of sit ups and crunches without lowering your body fat you will actually look more out of shape, with muscle devoloping under fat.
Doesn't stop people I know from trying to get a six pack by doing 300 crunches a night and no aerobics though.

if you wanna see the abs do cardio, sit ups are good to build up the abs not see them.
but why have a six pack, when you can have a keg?

Weird- I got rep'd on this thread, but the rep marker is neither green nor red, it's grey. And the comment is just "shut up" in capital letters.

Any idea

1) What the grey rep is?
2) What was going on in the bizarre mind of the person who left this comment?

I've gotten a couple of gray reps as well. I'd like to know what they mean too.

I'd like to know as well.

The individual seemed "troubled". Shall we say... :dunno:

i think the grey rep means that you must give out rep, before you get it

Wasn't this the same Marius Pudzianowski who has numerous bans for steroid abuse?
Hey the guy is powerful and respect to him for his achievements but has been known to abuse steroids.

I dont condone the use of steroids although you can get gains far quicker and easier

Hey don't feel bad about the neg reps. I actually managed to pick up a neg rep for fixing a computer problem for a user. Bringing my total to 9.

Shall we call this a competition?

Edit: To be on topic. Does anyone have any tips on maintaining good form when doing bicycle crunches? For some reason I can't ever seem to pick up a rhythm so I just go back to weighted sit ups, etc.

Oh and for those of you who actually enjoy looking physically fit don't forget to work the TVA. It's the muscle that actually causes your abs to protrude. The easiest way to work it is by just sucking your gut in as hard as you can for say 10 seconds, release and repeat for a few reps. . .you'll definitely feel it if done properly.
