Former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir has revealed he wants to stand and trade with arguably the best striker in the division, Cheick Kongo in just a few short weeks time at UFC 107 in Memphis, Tennessee, saying to take it to the ground and get the submission would prove nothing.

Speaking to CageReport.net, Mir said:

“I mean I wasn't supposed to beat Nogueira standing and look what happened there. I'm confident that I can strike with Cheick [Kongo] and make it competitive, my punches are a lot quicker than his, plus I know how to work angles better, trust me I know how to shut guys off. The thing is if I were to go out there and submit him in less than a minute It would prove nothing, a true martial artists would want to challenge himself and the challenge presented in front of me right now is to out-strike someone who on paper is the better striker.”

The pair will square off in the co-main event of the evening and find themselves as two of the few heavyweights currently fit enough to compete. Will Mir be able stop a man who’s only losses inside the octagon have come by way of decision or will Kongo take the next step up in his career and beat someone considered to be in the top five in the world.

I would love for him to stand and beat Kongo on the feet. Watching him fight Noguira was beautiful, I don't care that Minatouro wasn't at his best, it was still beautiful striking from Mir.

The thing is, why risk it? Ok, fine, If you want to prove yourself and work your stand up better, then do it in a gym with sparring or if you really want to do it in a competitive match, don't do it with someone who has heavy hands.

I know Kongo is more of a TKO man rather thank a KO man, but he's still going to put you on your arse.

Mir should just embarress him on the ground in my opinion. I love seeing Mir pull sick subs.

Still, I think Mir is just saying this for mind games. He'll take him down.

I really hope Mir tries to stand and trade with Kongo. He's getting laid out if he does.

That being said though, he won't. He'll take him down and try and work a submission.

Uh oh...another Frank Shamrock. Cheick has too much range + leg kicks. Tough battle for Mir to outstrike a pure striker. Regardless I like his style and mentality. It would prove nothing if he took Cheick down on the ground. Lets see if he sticks to that plan...

I think Mir will stand with him for several minutes, see how the striking goes.

Cheick better KO him before Mir works for a TD, not that he will 100% be able to get it..

Forgot to add that it won't shock me if Kongo TDd Mir lol. He just isnt the smartest tool in the shed.

This is true. For some reason I picture them standing for a bit, Kongo for some odd reason deciding to clinch with Mir then work for a TD. At which point he is promptly swept and subbed.

God damn it Kongo. lol

I think Kongo will be able to stuff some of Mir's takedowns (no, really, I'm not kidding). Mir doesn't really have good takedowns and he rather lives by being taken down than initiating the takedown himself. So if Kongo doesn't try for a TD, I don't really see this ending up on the ground. With that said... Kongo might just try for a takedown... good gameplanning isn't quite his style.

i think mir has underrated striking... but common???? its like trying to trade with houston alexander... just ask thiago silva.

I think kongo and jds is the best pure strikers in hw division in the ufc.

Bad game plan on Mir's part. I like Mir but attempting to outstrike Kongo just doesn't seem like a good strategy when his biggest attribute is Kongo's weakest. I hope Mir's just saying that as a bit of psychology so that when they do fight he takes it to the ground and subs him.

Exactly. Take a couple of decent uppercuts against an undead version of Nog and a single elbow against Lesnar right before he pepperonis your face. Remove them from your CV and what you got left in the striking department Mir, you smug cock? Nuffin, that's what. I'm sure your punch bag agrees with you though.

Soon as I can, I'm putting all me credits on Kongo.

all just hype, Mir is good at that. As he said on MMA connected, he watched the Cain-Kongo fight and knows Kongo is a turtle on his back. He said he is too lazy to beat on Kongo for 3 rounds like Cain did, he will just rip his leg off and put it home on the mantle place with the rest of them (seriously.... that's exactly how he said it).

Could Mir take those flush shots Cain did?? Will he have to??

I love the Nog excuses... im sure doctors clear guys on death beds all the time, if so?? maybe this sport is barbaric.

No way was that zombie we saw against Mir the same guy that fought Couture. No way. I appreciate your point regards doctors, but they cant and don't measure a fighters energy levels and sharpness. How can they? A tired and sluggish Nog would make it through a medical.

And that is why you fail.

Lol I really wanted to say that. Hopefully it is mind games, but I really doubt that Kongo gives in to any mind games, seeing he doesn't really make game plans either, so it's useless blah blah. Or maybe Mir is trying to be like Fedor and beat people at their own game lol :D

I love Mir, but he or his camp have been doing dumb things recently. He wanted to fight Brock on the ground, and now wants to fight Kongo standing up. Everything is upside down with him - grass is blue, sky is green.

Not really.

Lesnar TDd him. He wanted to beat him standing actually and expected Brock to stand with him.

He said something like "I thought he was gonna stand with me" post-fight.

i never quite understood Mir's "excuse" vs Lesnar?? If you thought he would keep it standing that is because you thought you had a signifigant advantage on the ground?? If so then when it went to the ground you shouldnt have been overwhelmed.... it's the equiv of Kongo getting KO'd standing and then saying "well i thought he was gonna take me down".... just silly imo

Frank Mir is a very smart fighter. He is a veteran that has been able to last in the UFC for a long time. Im guessing that he knows that trading punches with Kongo for any period of time will end up with Kongo doing the exact same thing that makes him so easy to take down in every one of his fights. When Kongo gets into exchanges he turns right back into a kickboxer and stands straight up, its like he forgets that people are allowed to go for takedowns. I see Mir trading with him just long enough to get him to do that (which wont take very long) and then taking him down and subbing him with ease. Mir is also no slouch striking, he isnt on Kongo's level, but he isnt Cain Valesquez either, he actually does have some head movement and footwork.

I remember when we first heard of this match I posted here "Mir's going to get TKO'd because he'll get cocky and try to trade with Kongo." :wink02:

What a dummy. He's going to get tooled in the standup and probably get rocked early by knees like in the Vera fight.

Frank Mir is a douchebag so I hope he takes his, "improving," standup and puts it against Kongo's deadly standup. Mir is obviously a dumbass, or he's misleading the Kongo camp which is more likely, if he says he's gonna stand and bang with Kongo. He's playing games, trying to get Kongo to look for the stand up, but as soon as Kongo goes to tear his ******* head off, he will drop down for the double and pray to god that Kongo's TDD hasn't improved.
