Is Penn's greatness at LW inflated?

Okay sure he beat gomi and thomas in their primes but were these guys ever elite?

Now lets flashforward to his 2nd stint at LW which just looks like clean up duty of hasbeens and UFs..He first beats pulver who cant even hang with 145ers in WEC..Then he beats UF journeyman stevenson.. After that its the undersized and ill-equipped sherk, then he beats another TUFer in florian..After that its diego..
With (an undersized LW in) edgar and another TUFer in maynard as future opponents...

My question is BJ penn overated at LW???

Being a part of TUF doesn't make you any less of a fighter my friend. It's clear given their performances that Kenny and Diego, despite their modest beginnings, are exceptional fighters in their own right... clear cut contenders, and yet both have been completely outclassed by BJ. Over-rated? I struggle to call myself a Penn fan, but even I couldn't logically label him as such.

The LW's outside the UFC are underated (outside maybe Eddie Alvarez). BJ is far and above the best LW in the world, the guy is a former WW, saying he is overated is nothing if not a weak pathetic arguement.

In short, no, not really.

These guys are among the best LWs in the world, now im not saying there arent guys out there who would give Bj a good fight.

and also LOL at joe saying they need to steal Aoki from japan! :thumb02:

Keep in mind that Bj completely owned the guy that was considered the best lightweight from overseas for a very long time. Bj ate Gomi for lunch, it was a one sided fight from start to finish. Bj did this while Gomi was at the top of his game. He also stopped Duane Ludwig and Caol Uno while they were both in there primes. Bj is far from overrated.

No way in hell is BJ overrated. He's proved himself time and time again, and he's still getting better. At 155 he is unstoppable.

If by overrated you mean the best LW of all time, then yes, he is the best LW of all time.

Penn is an amazing athlete, that was such a good clinic.

It was a really technical victory, his TDD is so amazing. The way he stopped Diego from throwing combos by constant use of his jab was really cool to watch. He did everything brilliantly tonight. IMO you can really see the improvement in conditioning and movement since working with Marv.

As for being over-rated, No f'ing way.

This thread is beyond retarded. Every LW is somehow "undersized". Including Sherk, who happens to be a HUGE LW if short... the guy fought at WW and dominated until he fought GSP. Or Maynard, again a compact but big LW. Maybe you expect to find Brock Lesnar at LW? It's called LIGHTweight for a reason.

If anything, the UFC has the biggest lightweights in the world. Guys like Aoki are so skinny they'd get outmuscled by the smallest LW in the UFC if it wasn't for their subs. I would wager Aoki would get his ass handed to him by Sherk, let alone BJ. Hansen is also a mediocre LW with a patchy record who would get murdered by the UFC elite.

BJ has dominated tons of top 10 LWs at the peak of their career like it was nothing. Including Gomi, Uno, Duane Ludwig, Sherk, Joe Daddy, Florian and now Sanchez. Overrated he is not.

Undersized sherk, Disregarding Florian because he was from TUF, the same with Diego... This thread is completely retarded IMO.

According to this thread, Penn is beating up natural bantamweight fighters and TUF nobodies. Nicely done sir.

your argument lacks one thing: a list of opponents who would beat penn and prove that he is overrated. seriously, who is he overrated, in comparison to? the only people you mentioned so far are that he hasn't beat are edgar and maynard and each of them has a loss to another TUF fighter with multiple losses. Just finding your logic kind of confusing. And I am not even a fan of BJ
