Oh, the controversy

It would be safe to say that approximately 90% of the users in this forum dislike, or even hate, Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia.

I suppose people hate him for his boring fights against Arlovski III and Monson. Or maybe that he acts like a goof at times and wears his belt everywhere. Or that he "crapped" his pants ... the list goes on and on.

I personally think everyone is underrating Sylvia and has forgotten some of his past achievements. The guy has 16 (T)KOs for a reason ... oh well.

Now here is the million dollar question:

If Sylvia beats Couture via devastating fashion and then goes on to fight Cro Cop ... and wins! Would everyone jump on Sylvia's nuts?

Remember, this is a hypothetical question. I am not claiming anything.

Discuss.

Big Tim already has my respect. He's the HW Champ, and he's defended his belt. He's 23-2 because he's a very good fighter, and really one of the most underrated. The reason I, and I'm assuming many others, don't like him is his talk/personality. Before fights he always says he'll end it early. But problem is, I don't see that when they step in the cage. He's a great fighter, but as Couture said, he fights not to lose rather than to win, and thats why I'll never like him.

But he's always had my respect.

Tim really doesn't bother me much. His fights may be boring but he has to be one of the smartest champs. He is well aware of his size and reach advantage and uses this to his full potential. Call it boring but his strategies are damn effective.

his 16 tkos would be impressive if they where against good fighter's. I hate tim he is a moron. Even if he beats crocop i will still think he is a idiot. Its not his fighting i actually hate him. He didnt press the fight against aa in the third and aa had a broken foot. Monson would've beat him i believe he just wasn't big enough. sometimes size just nake to big a diffrence no matter how good you are. And if he can beat randy which is possible cause randy is getting up there i still won't care. I just hope he actaully fights instead of bore out a decsiosn.

I can't stand Sylvia and here's why:

Sylvia has alot of potential as a fighter. For his size and his understanding of kickboxing he's fantastic. He used to be one of the best young strikers around when he was beating Cabbage and Ricco Rodriguez, but somewhere between his second fight with Arlovski and his third, he lost his will to be the best fighter that he could be.

Since beating Arlovski in their second fight we've seen him get slower, we've seen his punches lag and his cardio turn to sh*t. Now he's just trying to hold onto his title by hiding behind his jab.

Honestly, I can't respect that.

If Sylvia shows up at UFC 68 and KTFO's Couture in the first round like he should, based on what he's capable of, then that's awesome and I will, once again, be a Tim Sylvia fan, but he has to earn my respect back.

Isnt that the issue though? How can you respect a guy who's kept his belt by putting on lame fights? Use Pride as an example. Even the losers get respect IF they put on a good fight. I dont care if Tim wins or not, I pay to see a good fight and when he talks all kinds of trash then goes in and plods through... I loose all respect! I dont think he understands that people like a fighter because of HOW he plays the game, not the he plays it.

I've always backed up Sylvia. He has had three boring fights in his career. He has knocked just about everyone else out. He is a very good fighter. And i think all the recent sh** he has taken he is going to go balls to the wall against couture. He probably gets a knockout and then i think he will do very very well against crocop. I don't know if he wins but he will put up a hell of a fight.

Ive asked that million dollar question a few times, if Tim wins against Mirko, I'm sure everyone will make up a reason why it wasn't a good win and Fedors name would be brought up a million times.

I like to speculate on fights like that and always keep an open mind because it is a fight and anything can happen in a fight.....yes including a knockout win over Mirko Filipovic, nameldnaR niveK :dunno:

Well, even though some of you are stating that Sylvia will beat Couture, the bets say otherwise. There are a lot more bets for Couture than for Sylvia, I guess people's hatred for Sylvia runs very deep.

From an objective point of view, it is unlikely that Couture would win this fight.
I think this is a perfect fight for Sylvia, if he can (T)KO Couture he would regain some of that lost respect.

Hell, I actually predict a 4th round KO victory for Sylvia. However, if it goes to a decision, I will lose all respect for him.

he has my respect because he has fought and won fights. he fought with a stomach illness. he got his arm broken and didnt tap and wanted to continue the fight.

you can't tell me that if anyone else did that, people wouldnt be talking them up.

because he's had a few boring fights, people hate him. but they need to realize he's still a good fighter.

I really do believe hes going to knock out Randy. I dont see this fight going more then 3 rounds and I hope Tim will get his aggresiveness back. He honestly has a potential to be a great champion which is why it sucks he fights so cautiously sometimes.

I am tempted to say that a few people will have to respect him, because Randy, even coming out of retirement, is a great.

But most will come up with a way to ignore it. Some will ignore the evidence (i.e. they will just keep saying "he's fat, he talks sh*t, fights defensively and soils himself", ignoring his record and the fact he is obviously a good kickboxer, as usual). Some will try to minimize the significance of the evidence "Randy's old", "Tim is just a bad matchup for Randy", "Tim is just big".

A lot depends on the fight. If it is a 5-round, amazing fight where they put it on the line I think he will get respect. Because the average MMS fan, including hald the people here, has the memory of a goldfish. "Not human" one week, "can" the next.

Sylvia beats CC...isn't that the first sign of the apocolypse?;) I'm starting to warm up to Tim but his time is limited with CroCop in the UFC now
LOL.

The third. I think they go

Seven Seals of the Apocalypse

1. Goldie makes an intelligent comment about a fight
2. A fighter in a UFC match does a leg kick and Joe Rogan doesn't sat "Oh! Nice leg kick!"
3. Sylvia beats CroCop
4. Phil Baroni becomes a Gay Rights activist
5. ricefarmer replies to a post on this forum without being pesonally abusive
6. Danny Abiatti signs for Pride, goes up to heavyweight and beats Fedor
7. People on Sherdog stop posting obsessively about the superiority of Pride over UFC

When 7. comes, we really will know it is the end of the world.
