Jon Jones: I'm 'Too Big, Too Fast, Too New School' for Shogun Rua

Not much to read on the forum this morning so, I thought I'd actually contribute something.

There's something here for hater and hugger both...

That's one of my favourite quotes as well. I still think Shogun chops his legs off and retains the title. Bones will be a title holder one day. March 19th is not that day.

Watching that clip, I'm starting to get the feeling that Bones is getting over confident. He refers to himself as some kind of prototype. As does the hype behind him. I mean, he is very impressive. He may go on to actually crush Rua. Who knows? But, if he loses, I'm not quite sure how he'll handle it when he looks back at all the confident talk. Remember how BJ Penn completely changed after the second GSP fight? The dude never spoke about himself in the same way again.

His last line about "being a breath of fresh air that he cant handle". The look in his eye was mighty smug. If he turns out to be an unbeatable monster... then it'll all make sense! Hell, I'll enjoy it every step of the way! But if not? He better hope he has the mental tools to deal with it.

Yeah I tend to agree. I do however always remember that Bones is just trying to hype the fight, so not gona shoot him down for that, but it does seem like he's over confident has believes his own hype as much as anyone else.

I think he's in for a shocking ass whoopin. The good thing for him and his coaches is they can put it down to what realistically is the case - he's too inexperienced and technically weak to beat Shogun, the title shot came too early and he has years to improve. Once they realise that his athleticism and unorthodox style will only be enough against mid tiers, they will know the hard work is still to come. Guys like Shogun will light Bones up.

Honestly I think wherever this fight goes Shogun is going to show what being the best 205'er really means. When the skill level gets to a certain height, and I made this point in another thread, athleticism is squashed unless it's backed up with a similar level of skill. Check Rumble, Lesnar and so on. These guys can make a mid tier look like a small child but once they get in there with a Kos or a Cain, they get exposed.

Even if Bones takes Shogun down which he'll try desperately to do when Shogun goes berserker on him, he'll be having subs and sweeps coming from all over and I bet he'll get dominated on the ground too. If he takes Shogun down and Shogun sweeps him, he'll get finished by GnP. What's he going to be like off HIS back? Man, the Bones hype train is going to derail so bad, people never learn.

Bones isn't ready for this, I just hope for his sake he can deal with an ass whoopin and move on.

Man, I hope Shogun shuts this chump up.

Ok, now this is smack talk  All Rua fans may talk about how cocky, etc, JBJ is.

I am so excited for this fight, I really wish we had a couple more questions answered about JBJ before this fight happened, but oh well we get them answered by one of the best!

How scary would it be if he is right?

i'm a big jones fan, and i think he'll give shogun a great run for his money, but i don't think jones will have his hands raised at the end of the night, probably next yr when he's developed a bit more into the beast he'll be:thumb02:

There is an interview where Shogun says some thing like he has been isolating himself from his friends and even his family and just training as much as he can, saying thats how much the fight means to him. Then when you hear Jones' super confidence, my god, it gives me goosebumps.

These two guys are going to fuckin get at it.

I like Jones, but I don't feel Rua gets half the respect he actually deserves, I hope like you say Hiro, Shogun is going to break those bones.

I will take that as a compliment! :)

And, for the records, i don't consider myself a nuthugger.
For me, the definition of a nuthugger is someone who has a favorite and he thinks that certain person is the best ever, no matter what. And, no matter what you say to him, his favorite is the best. It's near impossible to use arguments and have a bice debate with him...because his eyes are covered by nuts. lol

I consider myself a fan. A big Jon Jones fan, because i watched him ever since his debut in the UFC, minus his first fight and i was surprised and impressed by his performances. For such a young fighter, with such a young career - he clearly has proven he is a very talented fighter. I think he came an extremely long way since his debut.
No doubt, he will have his toughest fight this saturday.

I'm a rational person, i like using logic and arguments.
Maybe i understand why you would consider me "tame"...LOL again.

I am a fan of Shogun also. Of course, not at the same level as being a Jones fan, but i consider Shogun my second favorite LHW, as weird as it sounds. When i first started watching MMA, Pride was more accessible for me. And Shogun was one of the best, so, seeing him fight it was hard not to be impressed by him. He was a MONSTER!
Any MMA fan should be a fan of his: he is one of the most exciting and talented MMA fighters in the world ever. His fights are a proof of that. You can't say anything bad about the guy. He is a a role model for the young generation, in the cage and outside of it.

But, li'ke i've said, i am supporting Jones in this fight. I really think he can win this fight. He has the necessary tools to beat Shogun and nobody can deny this. It's all up to him.
I believe Jones will be one of the best MMA fighters in the years to come.

As far as the: "i told you so" and "i knew it" guys, who will pop-up after the fight, it makes me laugh. Not my type.

In the end, my advice is: enjoy the fight!

Jones' smugness is undeniable, he tries hard to hide it but can't resist the odd comment. 'His BJJ is solid, his takedowns are solid, his striking is pretty solid'... don't underestimate Rua's striking man it's only the best in the division, and light years ahead of yours...

I think Jones and others are forgetting that Rua himself is young and fast, not to mention more powerful. The skill and experience gap in this fight will prove too much for the 'new school'.

It will be proven by someone drastically less experienced at both?

And what good is reach when you don't know how to use it? What good is athleticism when you are technically inferior? Jones will get hurt in this fight win or lose, Shogun IS a more dangerous fighter.

#26 · (Edited)
Yeah this fight will go to the ground for sure. I don't really see Shogun submitting Jones because he is not prominent in using his BJJ to submit people (only 1 sub in his career), but he'd have to get up in order to win this fight or flash KO Jones.

Also, I don't see why people are making a big deal about his "smugness". No one can be champion not having full confidence or compete at a high level in anything for that matter.

this seems to be becoming one of the biggest fights of the year...internet hype-wise at least...i wonder just how well this ppv will sell, if we go by the sites and forums it should sell like crazy, i didnt expect this much hype for this fight

i sure as hell cant wait to see if JBJ back up what hes saying:thumbsup:

I dont know what people use to judge ones athleticism either. I would say Rua is just as athletic as Jones. He's extremely fast, possess some very dynamic striking and is very flexible.

Fights like this make me so happy that I'm a fence-sitting non comittal Bones nuthugger. I can't wait. Win or lose, this is going to be a battle that proves SOMETHING that I already believe to be true. The ONLY outcome I don't want is a soul-crushing career derailing beating for JBJ.

I agree , He has all the physical attributes over Shogun.

He has better wrestling and is hungry and Shogun is coming off Knee surgery, sounds like a broken Record but that really is the key here and why i believe Shogun is going to lose.

I'm happy to say that Shogun will win by KO by the 4th. Either it's gonna finish by the 1st round or it's gonna be a back and forth war!
