Welterweight contender Diego Sanchez has never been shy in expressing his desire for a fight with UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes. This fall, Sanchez will get his wish, as he faces the legendary two-time welterweight champ on a date and at a venue to be announced.

“A matchup between two welterweight fan favorites has been verbally agreed to as Diego “The Dream” Sanchez will face former UFC welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes,” said UFC President Dana White. “Sanchez is coming off of a Fight of Night winning performance against Martin Kampmann and Hughes is looking to add another great victory to his incredible UFC career.”

Hughes all day. Diego has heart but what's he got to counter Matt's game? Not a lot. Matt will take Diego down and smother him all night, IMO the best he can do is survive and lose a UD.

Sanchez can make it as scrappy as he wants, he'll still get controlled, bad match up for him.

Diego has very under rated grappling. I still think he's one of the best scramblers in the game. Diego is very good from his back and can be dangerous from that position (check out his fight with Jon Fitch).

As for Hughes, he isn't the wrestler he used to be, nor the fighter he once was. He's older, slower and weaker.

I see Diego taking this.

I think Hughes has probably lost a lot of motivation since coming to the realisation that his title propsects in the division are basically non-existant. He wont beat Fich, BJ or Alves (as proven) and certainly wont be defeating GSP.

I think his quick despatchment at the hands of BJ recently probably took the wind out of his sails quite a bit.

However, i see him taking this fight. I see no evidence anywhere to suggest that a) hughes wont be able to take Diego down, and b) that diego can sub him or get back up (enough of the time).

I think Hughes is on the decline, but whilst no longer a top tier fighter he is certainly capable of holding his own and defeating fighters below that level, which i believe Diego falls into.

Basically, i dont think Hughes is the unstoppable machine he once was, but i would bet the house on him taking this one. Its a very favourable stylistic matchup for him.

Matt Hughes vs. Diego Sanchez, which was recently announced for sometime in the fall, will apparently go down on Sept. 24, 2011 in Denver, Colorado.

That's the word from Hughes himself but UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner could not verify that. He did, however, tell MMAFighting.com that there "is certainly talk" of the promotion holding an event in "The Mile High City" and that if it is to happen, the show would take place at the Pepsi Center.

I'd love to see Hughes rock Diego, and choke him out with the farmaconda, I can't stand Diego.

The weigh in will be hilarious though.
