"You know, I met Phil Davis. I think he's a great guy. I think he's great for the sport. But I also think he doesn't like to get hit
-JBJ

My next question for Jon would be: Do you like to get hit?

We know what he means though. Of course nobody likes to get hit but even in MMA some guys take it better than others. Some guys (BJ Penn is the one that stands out for me) don't even seem to notice when they get hit. It doesn't seem to bother him at all. Does it? Of course it does but he has mastered ignoring that discomfort, he sets it aside and as far as I can tell it doesn't affect his ability to fight significantly.

Now lets compare that to say Brock. Every time he gets hit solidly we seem him get flustered. It clearly bothers him, which is normal, but more importantly it affects how he fights and not in a good way. If you are going to have success in MMA you don't have to be a stone faced machine who can effortlessly shrug off punches like BJ (although it helps) but you need to be able to take it without changing the way you fight.

Nick Diaz, Bonnar, Wanderlei, and Leben do though...lolz!

But I get what he's saying. Phil is extremely hesitant and always falls back to his wrestling game which shows his lack of confidence in his striking ability and yeah the fact that he doesn't want to take in any damage. He seems out of his element which is too bad. My initial reaction was that Phil Davis would be able to challenge JBJ two years down the line, but he's only shown a ground game. JBJ would light him up on the feet and completely neutralize the ground game. That leaves Rashad and Machida. Rampage is gonna be a fun one...believe we're gonna see a similar fight as Shogun. Question is will Rampage tap...

I agree with JBJ - unfortunately Davis is still relatively one-dimensional. His striking looked extremely elementary against Lil Nog and it appeared as though he started to panic when he couldn't get the fight to the ground.

Really looking forward to seeing him fight Evans, because he's going to have to set his shots up MUCH better if he's going to have any chance of getting Rashad to the ground. If it does hit the mat and Davis is on top, I see him having a high chance of passing Rashad's guard and getting a sub. Hell, I can't EVER remember a time when Rashad was on his back ... anyone?

I think Rashad thinks he has the advantage on the feet but Phil's reach may cause an issue cause Rashad doesn't like to get hit either. I think that Rashad over commiting to the stand up will leave him open for the TD. Also Rashad gets in trouble everytime he is on his back. Everytime Rashad has been taken down he as taken damage, I think this is what Phil needs to work on to beat him, power shots from the top.

Havn't really thought about this fight til now.

I believe Rashad will TKO Phil...in fact I want him to WIN so he can fight against JBJ. Phil is a cool kat, but he will get wrecked by JBJ. He doesn't have the necessary tools to win.

This is Phil's biggest fight of his career. He's shown he was quite tentative against Lil Nog. Rashad is wily enough to mix it up and confuse Phil. Phil is ONLY comfortable when he gains top position. Once Rashad nullifies that he'll be panicking I'd imagine.

Hope we can see Rashad vs JBJ for NYE then Machida right after. I have to see in my own eyes if JBJ can defend and take out the top contenders in the LHW division. If he can then there's one man left.

I am most certainly pulling for Rashad because I want a Rashad/JBJ showdown. JBJ saying Phil doesn't like to get hit is funny considering JBJ hasn't been exactly tested in that way either, so we don't know how HE'LL REACT.

40 secs, on his approach to MMA & new pressure now that he's the champ: "The only thing I think about now as the champion and gettin' ready for this fight is pushing myself to a whole different level. There's been times where I put [pressure] on myself in training or maybe just pushed myself to the limit of failure. But now I'm going into each exercise with the mindset of a champion. Knowing that I'm a champion. Going an even extra mile. So that's the biggest thing that I'll be thinking about. As far as opponents or pressure, I feel no extra pressure. Obviously, I always wanna perform at my best. I'm a calm, relaxed fighter. I'm predicting I'll go in there with the same attitude and hopefully we have some of the same results."

1:17, Rampage UFC 130 Post-fight soundbite on Jones: "I don't got nothin' against him as of yet, just that he has my belt.... 'Bones' Jones, that's his name right? Jon 'Boney' Jones?"

1:26, Jones on Rampage: "He has pride. He has a history. He has following. If I was him, I would call it my belt as well. Right now, I feel as it's my belt and I'm not gonna give that away. I've worked really hard to get to this point. I'm young, I'm hungry. I'm not gonna let someone who's maybe half passionate take my dreams away from me. Right now, getting hit isn't an option. I'm striving for perfection. To give Rampage everything that I've worked so hard for - I just can't allow that to happen."

2:04, on who his head coach will be & where his camp will be for 135: "There's no back with Greg, I never left him. Me and Greg Jackson, we have a great relationship. We have a great chemistry. Me and my team have a great chemistry even though the situation happened with Rashad Evans. Everybody at Greg Jackson's camp is still a family and we're gonna be moving forward. I got some of the best coaches in the world on my side. I feel great and I wouldn't abandon that for anything."

2:33, on Rashad Evans' choice to fit Phil Davis: "Rashad could've been fightin' me, but he was impatient. He decided to take a [non-title] fight against Phil Davis instead of waiting. [He] should've been patient and he would'a been fightin' me soon, but things happen. He lost his #1 contendership, but that's something that he decided to do. So it's whatever."

2:54, on Phil Davis vs Rashad Evans at UFC 133: "I met Phil Davis. I think he's a great guy. I think he's great for the sport. But I also think he doesn't like to get hit. I think Rashad Evans' experience might get him through this fight, but I think its gonna be a good fight. If Rashad takes him lightly, you never know what can happen. If Phil Davis makes it a wrestling match, I think his odds will be a little stronger. I'm not rooting for anyone. I think their both fair inidividuals. Phil's a good guy, but if I had to put my money on it I would go with Rashad Evans. Definitely.

3:29, on staying grounded as the UFC LHW champ: "Well, just to know how much I don't know is what keeps me modest, keeps me humble, keeps me on the grind. Keeps me on the prowl. Being here today with all these different governors and congressmen, it's all very humbling. They say a real knowledgeable person, a real black belt in life, is someone who is aware of how much they don't know, instead of dwelling on the things that they do know. I'm aware that I don't know anything - that's real knowledge. As long as I keep that attitude, I think I can go very far."

A bit more from the interview.

Davis might not like to get hit but does rashad really throw punches? he mostly does the silly dance where he just throws faints to keep his opponents honest (or to set up a TD) but he hasnt really done the kickboxer stuff since machida tried to kill him

Hate this Jones/Davis match.

I'm a fan of Davis, but desperately want to see Evans/Jones. I also think it made no sense to book this match anyways. Davis is still developing, and somewhat short of Rashad. Even if Davis won, it'd be most likely ring rust on Rashad's part, and I don't want to see Davis get destroyed by Jones.

Uuurgh all round.

This is why I don't like Jones. He pulls out of his fight with Evans with the excuse of a surgery, one he didn't even have, and paradoxically Evans is ducking him? Absolutely pitiful.

The thing is though that Rashad was offered the fight again when Jon realized there would be no surgery but he didn't want to cange back over. I understand that he was already preparing for Phil and he said that he didn't want to change and then something happened again. But the reality is that jon was ready to fight him but he didn't want to scrap the Phil fight.

Not saying that Jon should act as though Rashad didn't want this fight but he is not wrong in saying that he passed up the fight.

Lol Rashad just can't win. I think he made the right call fighting Davis though. Fighting Jones for the title after a year and a half off just seems like a terrible idea.

On topic: I don't recall seeing anything from Davis that would suggest he can't take a punch. He could be referring to him turning every fight into a wrestling match I suppose.

Kind of comical words from Jones, he's not a very natural striker and lands shots because he can do it from a safe distance, when an opponent gets inside on him to strike, he always clinches and throws.

This is what makes the Rampage fight so interesting, because the little amount of kicks Rampage throws don't really shift his balance, his body punches are hugely draining, his punches to the head can rock anyone, he's very hard to takedown and can absorb a lot of damage.

Jones says Davis doesn't like getting hit, but I bet we'll see a much more vulnerable side to Jones if Rampage denies a takedown attempt and lands some combos. Jones' tiredness is visible in fights where he's NOT getting hit and he's NOT getting controlled, Rampage has an ideal style to frustrate Jones and punish him when he gets impatient, as well as having better cardio.

Never understood the once huge Davis hype anyway.

Jones' best work is by on the inside. Anyone who's seen him fight can attest to that.

He's great at controlling range and mixing in throws with strikes, but the just make him a multi-tooled mixed martial artist.

He does seem to fade at about the 11 minute mark, but he'll probably have Rampage a beaten fighter by then anyway.

As far as Jones goes, he has a pretty respectable chin...people act like he's never been hit before.

Bonnar hit him with a bunch of tight shots in close in the 3rd round. Bader landed a good right hand on him, as well as Shogun...Vera upkicked him right on the jaw. Jones' chin doesn't seem to be at all a liability and he doesn't react poorly to shots either.
