They both have made mistakes but Herb Dean and Big John are streets ahead of the rest imo.
The only question mark i have over Big John is that sometimes he seems to get swayed by the crowd, promotor etc. A prime example being the Rumble/Vitor fight where he kept standing the fight up after about 10 seconds of inactivity. This was clearly done as the crowd was Brazilian and the UFC were pissed at Rumble for missing weight.
Edit: I forgot about Kim Winslow... she is probably the best actually :confused05:
Winslow the best :confused02:? You need to watch more of her fights bro. She's the absolute worst, it's just the commission trying to be politically correct that she even has a job.
Mazzagati is a close second.
Herb is the best every fight he refs you know is a completely fair and safe fight.
Miragliotta is 2nd IMO. McCarthy is good too, but he seems far too lenient on people breaking the rules for an advantage (grabbing fence, shorts) and is too quick to separate or standup.

The fact is a woman should not be a ref in mens MMA, unless they are a beast of a woman. Being a ref requires a level of physical strength to seperate fighters. A woman of Winslow's stature simply doesn't have that.

I don't agree with that at all, but I think she sucks as a referee. Technically she should never need strength to pull a fighter off, a la Rampage continuing to beat a KO'ed Wandy, as the fighters should listen to her commands. Still she is a horrible freaking ref and is probably only hurting the idea of more female refs.
I think Herb Dean and Josh Rosenthal have been pretty steady.
However, I think Steve Mazzagatti and Kim Winslow should have a fight to the death to see who the shitter ref really is. At least we would be rid of one of them.... or if we're lucky, maybe they'd simultaneously kill each other.....
I completely agree, especially on the crap ref fight. I know they can't control who comes, but you would think the UFC could at least rule out a ref or two.
Herb Dean is usually at the top, all the refs make mistakes, but Herb tends to make the least, and is the most consistent at getting the fight stopped at the right time and noticing injuries and isint swayed by the fighter to keep fighting when he shouldnt.
Josh Rosenthal is always good, and imo Yves Lavigne and Dan Miragliotta has been steadily improving recently. I also think John McCarthy and Mario Yamasaki are middle of the pack refs.
Kim Winslow is the worst, and Steve Mazzagatti and Kevin Mulhall is close.
Right now my Ranks are:
Tier 1: Dean > Rosenthal
Tier 2: Miragliotta > Lavigne > McCarthy > Yamasaki > Marc Goddard
Tier 3: Mazzagatti > Mulhall > Leon Roberts > Winslow
McCarthy, Rosenthal, Dean. Pretty much agree with everyone else, except I think the worst is Cecil Peoples, with kudos to the ref of Pat Curran vs Joe Warren.
Edit* Fernando Yamasaki is kind of a wank as well.

Herb Dean and that's it. Rosenthal has more bad calls than good. People talk about how he lets fights go on longer than other referees do but they only bring up the few good calls that he has. They never bring up the fights where a fighter has gone unconscious or has taken a beaten that he shouldn't have. Pretty much every call he makes is a late stoppage.
EDIT: Forgot about Yamasaki. Don't think I've ever disagreed with a call of his.
Surprised Mario Yamasaki isn't getting more love. I can't think of many situations I've been disappointed with him in. Everyone makes mistakes here and there.
My two preferred are Mario Yamasaki and Herb Dean, also Big John I can't recall making consistent errors.
I think the most common referees (Herb, Rosenthal, McCarthy etc.) are all generally good at there jobs because they have a lot of experience now and know how to handle certain situations, its the newer refs that have the most problems, i find a lot of them dont even know the rules or understand what is going on a lot of the time.
If i had to pick the best ref id probably go with Josh.
Herb and Big John are the obvious ones. Rosenthal is pretty good as well. He was great in the Silva - Sonnen fight. The only thing he could have done better was to DQ Sonnen for unsportsmanlike conduct. Fake tapping is NOT cool.
big john was the best for a long time without a doubt, with his long absence from the UFC i think herb dean really stepped up and its hard to pick between them now.
who is the 3rd guy he was pointing at in the 1st gif?
