Breaking into M.M.A. Training Log

Hello all, I've been mostly lurking these forums for awhile now. A little introduction: I'm 20 years old, just wrapping up doing a little world travel. While I was in Thailand I got involved with a Muay Thai training camp called Tiger Muay Thai, and trained pretty hard for a month and loved it. I decided to see where this passion can take me, and have decided to aim to fight in my first M.M.A. fight at a local amateur venue in my town called Valley Fight this coming December. This means I have a lot of work to do.

I will be training at a local M.M.A. gym called Revolution Chilliwack, as well as training with my friend who also wants to fight within the year.

I'm 20 years old, Southpaw, 6'4 about 195lbs, muscular build from years of weightlifting (I've got an enormous journal on a bodybuilding website but alas, there's no point talking M.M.A. on a bodybuilding forum, so here I am) but relatively weak cardio, other weaknesses include an occassional occurence of shin splints and contact lenses. I've only trained Muay Thai for a month and that's basically all my training besides a bit of self taught boxing.

I'm wrapping up my travels now, sitting in Bangkok for a few more days. I checked out a nearby Muay Thai gym but it was a hole in the ground with some mats and wasn't cheap, so **** it. I'm doing bodyweight exercises and shadowboxing in my room to help maintain what I can.

I go home soon so training resumes on August 1st as I enroll in the MMA gym back home and in addition begin my own training with a partner to keep the total training time to about 3.5 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Training is 4 weeks on followed by 1 week rest, each week is 5 days training, alternating between 2 days set out like this:

Day 1 - Technique
Stretch
Shadowboxing
Hit Pads
Standup Sparring
Rolling
Stretch
Go to class

Day 2 - Conditioning
Stretch
Skipping
Weight Training (Divided into Push/Pull/Leg days focusing on functional strength, explosive power, and endurance.)
Heavy Bag
Speed Bag
Stretch
Go to class

Classes are as follows:
Mon - Beginner Jiu-Jitsu
Tue - M.M.A.
Wed - Beginner Jiu-Jitsu
Thur - Boxing + Muay Thai
Fri - Boxing + Muay Thai + M.M.A
Sat - Rest
Sun - Rest

Going to ease myself into it and build momentum; first week just go to the classes, second week go to the classes and do training every second day, then by the third I'm doing the full routine. Also going to start light on my weights and build momentum over the weeks as powerlifters do.

I've also wrote up a flexible diet that I believe I can maintain pretty easily. I'll add the details once I've gone through with it for awhile in case any changes need to be made. What's important is the 6000 mostly healthy calories to exceed my maintenance level for a gradual weight gain.

Supplements are Protein/Creatine Monohydrate/Multivitamin/Fish Oil, considering a pre-workout supp like N.O. Xplode but don't really need the extra hit to the wallet or a caffeine dependency, so we'll see on that one.

I picked up all my gear to train out here in Thailand for nice and cheap. Got 16oz gloves, shin guards, wraps, mouth guard, and headgear. My friend has bought all of these things as well as some Thai kicking pads and a round timer, so we're all equipped and ready to go.

I'm aiming for December for my premier amateur M.M.A. bout. Wish me luck and feel free to pass on advice. I'm gonna tear a hole into this guy. :thumb02:

Drillz Day 1 - Taking Back 30 mins

Chairsit
Harness Attack
Mount to Back Take
Spin Behind
Spiral Ride

Going to take a few days to repeat this day. The spin behind and harness attack will take a ton of repetition to be second nature and fast enough to pull off. The chairsit is probably the most important one but I need to work on pulling them in tighter and work on flexibility for stepping my first leg over.

Tech was sweeps from butterfly guard. From laying down with hooks in, lift and pull their elbows as your stretch your legs out to stretch them out and help pull you to a sit. Pick one side to underhook and grip their belt at the back. Opposite knee from the under hook goes flat to the mat for half butterfly, trap the same side arm, rock back and extend hooked leg for a sweep to mount or sit through for scarf hold.

Second option is from an overhook instead of belt grip, the overhook reaches through to opposite collar. Reach over with free hand to grip the should and pull them in to try for the collar choke. Alternatively trap their free arm, rock back and kick through for the same sweep.

Rolled with a legit smaller brown belt his collar chokes from guard were a constant threat, his deep half guard ****ed me up without fail. Think I got tapped once or twice. Next was Rommel, one of the instructors. It quickly became clear he wasn't looking to play guard so I got mine when I could. Futile sweep attempts or two, he gets a standing pass, spend almost the entire round grip fighting and bracing and surviving. Long round on the bottm, but I survived at least. Next was with a good sized purple belt that I saw ******* another purple belt, exhausted, I settled in for a long round. Once again knee wrestling felt futile so I pulled guard. Getting better at pulling guard on these guys and actually closing it, which is nice. With an extra bump setup I caught the pendulum sweep and hit mount. Flowed through mount/half guard/back/mount for the rest of the round. It's funny I didn't expect the Ryan Hall shit to start paying off right away but I used quite a bit of stuff. Threatened arm triangles, ezekiels and RNC but he fought them off valiantly. Fell off for an armbar in a scrambe to tap him at the end of the round. Felt nice. Rolled a small blue after that and just ****ed around being aggressive but light. Good class.

Tech was back take from butterfly guard and a guillotine sweep from butterfly. ******* butterfly guard. I'm so bad at it. Of course we had to drill guard passes from butterfly guard and I did awful. I'll need to pick an open guard game to get the hang of to call myself a purple belt, just have to find the right one for me. Maybe that can be the focus after this back attack dvd.

Rolling started with a good size brown belt, bunch of back and forth nearly got collar choked out but postured some how passed his guard, he turns away, BAM ryan hall chair sit! He squeezes out before I lock the second hook, try to stay on his back while he turtles, fell off for an armbar. Woot, a higher belt tap two days in a row. Next up that same damn purple belt ****ed me up again from his guard, tapped me once or twice, was able to counter him a bit better today but still useless on offense.I think I rolled someone else, I forget.

Did some training at a Brazilian Olympic wrestling gym. Learned a few technique but I felt retarded doing it and the training partner I was with was a huge Olympian dude that wouldn't let me practice easily. Then we wrassled starting from a stand and continuing on the ground. I guess you could say Mr.Olympia exposed my lack of TDD. Haha. Should be video coming of me getting crushed.

Leaving Rio tomorrow. Got asked to stay and take on a house manager position for accomodation. If this had been on the table earlier I could have happily found part time work and stayed here for 6 months or longer. Suprisingly attached to my girl too and had a sad goodbye tonight. Goddamnit, not ready to go. /livejournal

Jogging, hilly. 4.8km about 27 mins.

I'm in the process of moving to Toronto and will be trying out for new gyms. First up is Toronto BJJ, they have a 30 day free trial. Definitely won't be there every day as i don't live downtown yet, but will check it out as much as I can, starting tomorrow.

First class of my trial at Toronto bjj. Quick warmup and straight into 10 minute rounds of rolling. Holy crap. I was expecting to have a leg up after Brazil but not the case here. My first roll was with a monstrous purple belt that choked me like 4 times. Then another purple who again tapped me like 3 times. Finally I thought I'd have some relief with a smaller blue belt. Not the case. He's all over me with 2 or 3 taps. Goddamn.

Gym seems pretty cool, lots of blues and purples. Definitely competition focused...seems to be a large, tightly knit team, very competition oriented...maybe too competition oriented. Will keep heading back whenever I can get to Toronto.

Deadlift 3x

Bought my own 50lb kettlebell. Good god it's heavy, but I wanted one I could grow into. Lots of little breaks and long ones between rounds. Excited to improve and got a couple weeks before I can train any

Diet is bouncing between 203-206lbs, diet has been slipping at best.

Living downtown Toronto now. Haven't been training because I'm up in the morning at 4:30 and work is exhausting the hell out of me. Next two days are off I'll do some training though. Pretty cool swinging a kettlebell around in a park, I'm digging it. Except some Thai chick approached me and interrupted my workout.

No Gi + MMA Classes

No Gi was all takedowns from a pummel. I've never done shit like that, and I felt and looked like a complete noob. Not the best time. MMA class was better but I got paired with 230lb muscle man mma fighter, I was a good partner and probably beat him in the standup and at least was competent on the ground but definitely not working much when he was on top. I feel ******* exhausted, 3 hours put in tonight.
