Vinny Magalhães Says Sonnen “Can Submit Anderson This Time”

By Jamie McAllister
Vinny Magalhães in an an interview with TATAME.

The ADCC Champion was recruited by Chael Sonnen in order to develop Sonnen’s Jiu-Jitsu skills for the rematch with Anderson Silva at UFC 148.

Magalhães admits he has received a lot of criticism from his fellow Brazilians for helping Sonnen. He also said in his current situation with no fights lined up the offer was too good financially and professionally to turn down.

“Things got ugly because I’m training Chael and he says many things about Brazil, much bullshit, but it’s my profession. I can’t deny things just because people will get bothered by it. I listed a bunch of reasons, financial reasons are the biggest one is about my family and the fact I won’t fight for a year.”

Sonnen is known for his trash talking but Magalhães witnessed another side and had nothing bad to say about The American Gangster. He states that Sonnen told him it was all about ticket sales and even apologized to him.

“Man, he might be bipolar but I’ve only met nice Chael. It’s quite the opposite. He told me it’s all about advertizing, to sell the fight and he does something nobody in the sport does. The first time I talked to him about this fight he apologized and said: “sorry, but I have to sell 800 thousand”, so it’s nothing personal.”

When asked about his predictions for the fight Magalhães predicted a win for Sonnen and thinks he may even submit Anderson this time around.

“Man, it’s not only because I trained with him, but I believe he has a hard style for Anderson to defeat.”

“I believe it will go the same way as the first one did: Chael taking him down and controlling him from the top. If he believes in his game, I believe he can submit Anderson this time. Now, if he doesn’t submit him, he’s gonna win via points.”

When asked if he would be cornering Sonnen at UFC 148 Magalhães admitted he would prefer not to.

“No. I don’t think so.”

“I’d rather not be in his corner so I wouldn’t get involved in all this Anderson thing. I rather not get involved.”
I'd rather see him tap from strikes :)

Tough choices. My question is what if he was flushed with cash. Would he have taken the job.

We shall see on Saturday...

First off....LMAO!!!! OK VINNY.

As to Chael trying to sell the fight, yeah everyone knows that he isn't serious. Him playing dumb games about not knowing that tapping ends the fight and he is really the champ. yeah ok fair enough but to disrespect an entire people and get personal with a man and his family is a question of a persons integrity. So basically if Chael in a sundress doing the macarena on top of the local bar on free wings wednesday would get 800K buy on a PPV we should expect that next...Gimmie a break. Its meant to sell the fight but why does personal decency have to take a back seat.

People crossing moral lines for monetary gain?! This is an outrage.

Seriously though what world do you live in? Lets face it, YOU would do the macarena in a sundress for 800k buys..

I could absolutely, absolutely see a Hughes vs. Almeida submission from Chael.

Chael catches Silva in a tight sprawled guillotine/darce early on and just decides to wrench it 100%, Silva goes to sleep, the MMA world explodes and implodes at the same time.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Chael got a sub on Anderson. I remember at least two submission attempts (if you can even call those attempts, because he didn't really commit to them), one was a kimura, one was an arm triangle I think. Not sure why he didn't go 100% on that kimura though, it looked like it was locked in good, who knows if he would've subbed him though.

Man i love this fight, i can honestly say i am completely impartial and in my heart of hearts i really have no preference for this fight.

Part of me thinks Anderson Silva ends this fast and to be honest this is probably the most likely outcome - then there's this other parts where Sonnen totally dominated him in the last fight and has the perfect style to exploit the only whole exposed in Anderson's game.

Honestly this is one of the few fights where i think ALL outcomes are possible.

Anderson via TKO/KO? Ofcourse.
Anderson via Submission? Happened before, absolutely possible.
Anderson via Decision? If he can stuff the takedowns he will dominate on the feet, this is possibly the least likely outcome as he'll surely finish Sonnen if he can stuff the TDs.

Sonnen via TKO/KO? YES, this one is being severly overlooked, if it goes the same way as last time i would not be shocked to see a GnP TKO.
Sonnen via Submission? Absolutely possible for me, there are plenty of sources acknowledging Anderson is not a truly elite grappler.
Sonnen via Decision? Almost happened last time.

and Sonnen is?

even with the 300+ pitter-patter punches he landed he couldn't finish Silva with a choke.

The point is to compare the principle not the severity obviously.

The point is I don't understand where this principle comes from "Oh ordinarily this is wrong, but he's doing it for some money so it's ok". That's just dumb. That principle does not exist in any morality, yours or mine or any rational human being's, so it's a bit absurd when people on this forum keep saying it like it makes any sense whatsoever.

You can still do it by all means, but don't expect to use "he did it for the money" as a plea in any court of law for any crime petty or big. Like "Your honor I was only doing 120mph because my buddy here bet me $100 that I couldn't". I imagine the judge will have quite a laugh and probably fine you double.

I understand "Oh ordinarily this is wrong, but he's doing it to save a life/for an emergency/the greater good" or whatever as some sort of amelioration, but putting one selfish motive on top of another doesn't suddenly make it unselfish.
Sorry, but there's a huge difference whether you want to admit it or not. Shit it seems like you don't even understand it really, I mean do I really have to spell it out for you. There's a huge moral difference between making money by hurting someone's feelings and making money off of physically hurting someone.

Thing is, what he is doing isn't illegal, so comparing it to illegal activities is idiotic. Just stick to insulting him about his ACTUAL legal troubles in the past. At least that made a bit of sense, although it speaks volumes of your double standards.
oh, so we can't blame murderers or rapists before we have been in their situation and said "no, I think I'll walk away"?

do you even read what you type?
I didn't realize I said it was ok to **** or murder people. Do you even read at all, or do you just copy and paste sentences in hopes that they will make sense?

I'm so tired of people comparing some insults to actual ******* crimes, for the love of god just stop.

ife B Ez - Yep! Lutter...who tapped to a triangle and elbows.

Listen guys, I'm not doubting that Sonnen is gonna put up one hell of a fight and that his BJJ probably improved. He did the first time but the Silva that fought Sonnen is not the same Silva that fought Okami and Vitor. I am glad he is pissed, people say it's not good to fight with emotion but I think for Anderson this will work in his favour.

Not gonna happen. That said, if he subs Silva, I will suddenly have to feel a very small amount of respect for him. If he beats him standing, I will have a little bit more respect for him. If he holds him down and ptter patters his way to a boring ass wrestling plus just enough offense to not get stood up decision, I will continue to dislike what he brings to the sport (even if he's not serious with his BS, I don't care, his antics are not, IMHO good for the sport), and dislike him as a fighter.

If he gets his face kicked through the back of his head, I will smile all night.
