It appears that Dan Henderson be trying to regain his UFC light heavyweight title shot on February 2nd. In a live interview on Spike TV's Uncensored Live, Hendo confirmed that he will be facing former champion Lyoto Machida at UFC 156. The bout is probably a number one contender's bout, considering both men have claims for a title shot already.

Henderson (29-8) was scheduled to face champion Jon Jones at UFC 151, but was forced to pull out late with a knee injury. Due to the late notice and the champ's decision not to face replacement Chael Sonnen, the card was scrapped. Jones has now been booked as an Ultimate Fighter 17 coach against Sonnen, and the two men will face off on April 27th. Meanwhile, Hendo has been rehabbing his knee and Dana White made it known that Hendo would need to win another fight before he got another title shot. Enter the Dragon.

Machida (18-3) had apparently earned a title shot with an extremely impressive performance against Ryan Bader at UFC on Fox 4, knocking him out in the second round. But in the UFC 151 fallout, Machida turned down a short-notice title fight against Jones (the guy that choked him unconscious at UFC 140), and was put back into the queue as a result.

The main event of UFC 156 is a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar. If what Hendo said on Uncensored is true and the two men do meet in Vegas on February 2nd, this would have to be the co-main event.

Not sure if the official date and place has been posted. Hope to god Dan lands that big shot and get's a title shot.

Keep hoping. Outside of Jones, Machida is by far the worst possible match up for Hendo, he won't be lured into a brawl like Shogun was. Machida will light him up the whole fight.

Don't know if it goes the distance or if Hendo gets stopped but no matter what, the Dragon will leave Las Vegas with a decisive and dominant victory.

I'm thinking the exact same thing. Hendo has heart as a main weapon, but technical/smart fighters (especially the top ranked ones with few holes in their games such as machida) seem to be his achille's heel

I actually think Machida is a worst matchup for him than Jones is because Jones still seems to be somewhat emotional, while Machida is more cool and calculated.

I'd be very surprised if hendo wins this one.

Machida will (T)KO Henderson, you heard it here first. Hendo is a big hype job, yes he was a very good MW but he is not a great LHW. He looked sloppy and slow against Shogun and barely won because Shogun is back to his old poor-cardio Mark Coleman version of himself, and he beat Fedor when he was shot and lost to Jake Shields of all people.
A technical, elite LHW like Machida will expose the hype job that Hendo is at LHW. My 2 cents.

Well your 2 cents doesn't mean much.

Hype job? How can a 41 year old who has been in the sport over a decade be any sort of hype job? What on earth are you babbling about?

He absolutely destroyed Shogun until he gassed in the 4th round, because he is focking 41 years old and doesn't take rounds off. DESTROYED. Last I checked Shogun was a top 5 LHW. Last I checked he beat Machida twice.

:confused03: Clueless you are.

This is a fun fight. Hendo chucking bombs while Machida peppers him.
I see visions of the Page/Machida fight. Which AIN'T NO FUN to me.

I agree and I think Hendo's win over Calvalcante is very under rated and over looked for some reason. Rafael is a striking beast, dudes a monster, but no one seems to ever credit Hendo for that win, which was very impressive.

I see Hendo KO'ing Machida in round 2.

How good do people think he is? A top 4 LHW? Why isn't he not "nearly" as good as that? Humor me.

Put Jones, Rashad, and Machida ahead of him. Who else? Hoow is he nearly not that good? What do you have him 9th with no shot at beating a top LHW? When last time out he destroyed a top 3 LHW at the time? You make it sound like people think he is the best LHW out there. No one does.

What is this nonsense?

Common sense seems to be lacking here.

Maybe he will. Pretty bold statement to say a guy who has never been TKO'd/KO'd in a decade of fights will "probably" get KO'd.

He got rocked against Feijao, Fedor and Shogun. Machida is a lot better than any of them at this juncture.

Dan won't be able to take Machida down or clinch with him at all, and he is way out of his league on the feet.

If you want to bet on it PM me. Dan is getting owned.

He could get owned. Or he could stalk Machida for 2 rounds while Machida backpeddles and take a dec. Ala Rampage fight.

One of the reasons I don't like this fight. Hendo and Rampage are similar in what they do. They will stalk you if you aren't stalking them. The Rampage fight was pure garbage.

Hope this one isn't pure garbage. We talk about Machida having flawless victories. Or at least his biggest fan does. But it is easy for Machida to be aggressive vs. guys who have nothing for him. When even an old washed up Page inflicted fear of a big punch, Machida got on his horse.

A lot easier for Machida to look amazing when he has nothing to worry about. Say what you will, but the H-Bomb lands...even if people think Hendo is slow, it lands..there is no denying that.

Like Nick Diaz, people act like it is so bad Hendo gets dropped. Why? It shows he can recover and is generally tougher than his opponents. It shows he is always in a fight and doesn't wilt.

All of those guys were killers. But none had anything that resembles Machida's style. I'm not saying Dan will win. But I find it funny that a guy as tough as Dan, a guy who beat Fedor and Shogun as an underdog (yea, a lot of people, many of you picked Fedor and Shogun in those fight) but I find it funny a guy like THAT is so easily counted out.

He has made all you doubters look stupid the last couple fights. He finds a way. That is fact.

This is a bad match-up for Henderson. I want him to win so bad to see the Jones vs. Hendo fight. I just don't think that he will be able to KO Machida. And I believe that with Machida's elusive style that he'll be able to outpoint Hendo to get the win. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

He has amazing timing.

Not sure why so many people are saying Machida by a mile. It could happen, as Machida is quick as hell and could make Hendo look slow.

But who has this "new Machida" fought? He beat a crusty Randy Couture with 1 leg into retirement before the fight was made. He beat the GREAT Ryan Bader. Beforehand he lost a dec. to Rampage.

If anyone is being overrated here it is Machida. Hendo isn't Ryan Bader.

Styles make fight. And Machida's style may very well be hard for Hendo to figure out.

But surprised to see so many people write off Hendo when he has been on one of the better runs of any LHW not named Jon Jones. When he destroys Shogun for the first 3 rounds it wasn't anything special. Giving 20lbs in size he was the first ever to KO Fedor. Knocked the F out of Feijao a 10 top or near top 10 LHW with good stand up. Those aren't special.

But Machida's win over Ryan Bader and Randy Couture were some how impressive as hell.

Weird.

One problem for Machida, I don't think he has the one-shot KO power to put Hendo in trouble, and if Hendo recognizes that and fights accordingly it's going to be a lot closer than most people think. Machida needs to play it smart and stay the hell away from the fence, which he should be able to do with his speed and footwork. If he gets careless and caught against the fence, he's going to be eating a ton of big punches. He doesn't have Shogun's toughness and ability to soak up damage so if that happens he's going to be in a ton of trouble.

Machida has shown serious weakness for the overhand in the past. Shogun landed it a ton in the first fight and hurt him a couple times and dropped him in the second fight. Rampages on real success was his overhand Jones hurt him with a big right before he dropped him with an overhand left to set up the finish.

Who is better than Henderson at landing the huge overhand?

It's not that his striking is that much worse than Lyoto's, or that Lyoto's is that better than the other fighters Hendo has faced- its' that Lyoto's striking/timing/movement is so much different than those other guys.

It's been said plenty, but I'll say it again: it's got to be tough finding a guy to train with who can effectively emulate what Lyoto does in the Octagon.

I'm predicting Hendo to get wrecked by Lyoto, and I suspect it's gonna' look a lot like the Bader fight in terms of speed, technique, and outcome:

Hendo will be damaged by a shot he doesn't see/expect, and he won't recover.

TKO victory for Lyoto here.

hendo is legit of course. but lyoto is a bad matchup for him

no kicks and slower footwork will make it hard to land his big shot

i also think lyoto is improving all the time as he has been fighting top guys for awhile now

lyoto only loses if he gets complacent imo

I will sig bet or whatever kind of bet anyone here that Dan won't get finished. It is a 3 round fight and a lot of you are picking Dan to get TKO'd or KO'd for the first time ever. Odds aren't on your side.

Again, Hendo isn't Ryan Bader or Randy Couture. People see a spectacular Machida KO of Bader and pee their pants. People have short memories and love to back what they last remember seeing.

Hendo will not be finished by Machida in a 3 round fight. Bet me.

#37 ·
I could defiantly see that being the case if he does finish him. It will probably be a submission. But in a 3 round fight I doubt it. Hendo won't gas that bad.

Plus who is going to the ground? I doubt either of them really try for TDs. Hendo defiantly won't. Machida may if he gets hit in the face a couple times. Both guys believe they can win the fight by striking.

Slow, unmotivated, and plodding Rampage Jackson can win against Machida, but people are saying that Dan Henderson, who still has the heart of a lion, stands no chance? I'm all for taking a side, but to completely count out Dan Henderson of all people is to set yourself up for disappointment.

People tend to remember what they last saw. People get all giddy every fight and change their minds on things based on what last happened.

Machida KO'd Ryan Bader in spectacular fashion. A Ryan Bader that has nothing to offer.

Hendo has been out for a while, and they last remember Hendo getting beat on while gassed out in the 4th and 5th rounds.

So they do the math and think Machida will destroy Hendo. Hendo was hit and survived 3 harder punchers than Machida. Not as precise but harder punchers. So not sure why everyone is expecting some sort of spectacular KO from Machida.

But hey, it could happen. I suppose you could say Hendo is "due" to get KO'd. Lol.
