How would a very talented pure bjj/grappler fighter do in the UFC. No real striking skills but extremely good at ground fighting.. as it seems grapplers > strikers.
BJ Penn entered the UFC as pretty much a strictly BJJ fighter, since then though the UFC has evolved and a fighter would need at least some kind of striking base even in the basics to survive. although Shinya Aoki has maintained a fairly decent career in Japan using pretty much strictly grappling but that is due to a phenomenal ability to utilize his BJJ from any position including some that he is forced to reduce to in order to get his opponent to the ground once he has somebody he needs to hold on and take it to the ground regardless of the position it leaves him in.
It only works in mma if the guy wants you play the game. It's very very difficult to keep someone down with you on the bottom. A lot of amazing grapplers have been nullified by his opponent just refusing to be involved. Look at how easily Gil Melendez neutralized Aoki by just refusing to engage.
With elite level wrestling and elite level bjj I think you could get to the middle of the pack. But no striking means no gnp and it also means you're ****ed against a guy you can't hold down or a guy who just wants to grab on and stall to get a stand up.
There are no pure strikers wihtout any wrestling and grappling knowledge around in the UFC anymore. Today there are only MMAists, often with preferences, but MMAists nonetheless.
True that all fighters in MMA are of mixed disciplines, but they always have a origin discipline. Like wrestlers still come from wrestling. Kickboxers still come from kickboxing, BJJ comes from BJJ and they all incorporate other disciplines into their style.
