UFC Quick Quote: Jon Jones will ‘swallow’ Chael Sonnen, can win with one hand tied behind his back

By Adam Guillen Jr. on Jan 12, 1:30p 51
Paul Abell-US PRESSWIRE

Wanderlei Silva picks Jon Jones to retain his belt against Chael Sonnen when the two meet at UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" in Newark, N.J., on April 29, 2013. On top of that, "The Axe Murderer" advised "Bones" that he can defeat Sonnen by simply utilizing a jab while having his other hand tied behind his back.

"Whatever the boss [UFC President Dana White] says, I sign underneath. If he thinks this fight is fair, then I think he's absolutely right. It was a fight I wanted to see; [but] Jones will swallow Sonnen. I spoke with Jones and told him that he can win the fight only with jabs, with one hand tied behind his back. The only person who can beat Jones today is Anderson [Silva]."
-- Wanderlei Silva gave his thoughts to Sherdog about the upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight title fight between current division champion Jon Jones as he attempts to defend his title for the fifth time against Chael Sonnen on April 27, 2013 in Newark. And, to no surprise, seeing as how Silva and Sonnen aren't exactly the best of friends, "The Axe Murderer" is picking Jones to ‘swallow' "The American Gangster" when the two meet in New Jersey. In fact, Silva says during a conversation with Jones , he boosted "Bones'" confidence level by telling him he can defeat the trash-talking Sonnen using only one hand to jab while the other is tied behind his back. Furthermore, the former PRIDE FC champion says he spoke to the 25-year-old about a potential fight against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, but wouldn't reveal just what Jones had to say. For what it's worth, he proclaims his countrymen to be the only man with the skills to defeat the 205-pound king. Interesting, considering Silva himself just made the move back up to light heavyweight division and will take on Brian Stann at UFC on Fuel TV 8 on March 2, 2013 in Saitama, Japan at the famed Saitama Super Arena where Silva enjoyed most of his success during his glory days as PRIDE's poster boy.

wand is just getting more and more crabby as an old timer, it's silly for him to say such a thing when he hasn't got the best chin these days anyhow

#5 ·
Crabby, maybe. Loyal to his countrymen, definitely.

When I saw that Wandy made that comment, my first thought certainly wasn't 'that's outrageous.' It was more along the lines of, 'I feel like he's just saying that out of hate for Sonnen.' Surely there's no denying that Chael is facing an uphill battle, but I have to believe that Wand is a little biased based on Chael's fight selling technique from his middleweight title fight. You know what I mean, the absolute bashing of Brazil that he did. I'd be a little spiteful myself if I was in his situation, that's for sure.

yes jones can beat sonnen with a jab even though it took the GOAT a lot more to put sonnen away but now jon is gonna do it with a jab, my god are you retarded.

#6 ·
Yeah, wandy still has a vendetta against a guy he will never face or beat and has to say silly things to make him feel better, worry about stann wandy he might retire you.

#7 ·
He won't put him away with one hand, but he also won't lose to him - that's damn sure ;)

I imagine this will look a lot like the Rashad fight, lots of shooting from the challenger and defending the shots for the champion. This time around I see him stopping it somewhere in the third or fourth though.

I still think Sonnen is out of his league here (Skilled as he is) Jones is an absolute monster. Jones will keep the distance standing and be very hard for Sonnen to take down.

The second round of the second Silva fight Sonnen had trouble getting Silva down, I think Jones will be a lot harder to take down since he's a better wrestler, a bigger man and will be prepared for it.

#13 ·
Yeah to me, Chael is a guy you can never take lightly because he's a master at implimenting his game plan. Jones will have to be fully aware and make sure he's just as good at using his and he should be fine. Jones has a lot more naturally going for him so if he can match Chael is trying to get the fight working to his strategy, he should be able to walk away with it.

Jones can make mistakes though. He kept going to the ground with Vitor after Vitor pulled guard, and was just asking to get submitted. He was smashing him on the feet and not even close to taking one back so there was really no need for him to go down. If Jones was fighting someone like Werdum instead, he'd have lost quite easily imo.

Jones is gonna beat Sonnen, but what a ridiculous statement by Silva. Sonnen is not a dumb fighter, he is not going to sit behind Jones's jab for 5 rounds straight. I doubt Sonnen is going to take down Jones, but if anyone is going to, it is Chael Sonnen. Jones is tall, and has a pretty high centre of gravity which makes him more susceptible to a takedown. He is going to keep his hands low, but that opens him up for strikes to the chin. Always interesting to see how Jones break down his opponent's game.

Wand is just trying to stay relevant, the poor guy.

Even I know that the odds of Sonnen defeating Jones are slim. But it's not going to be so easy. I don't even believe that Jones will finish Sonnen. I can totally see a 5 round standup affair with Jones picking Sonnen apart from a distance, ala Rashad Evans, but even then, Chael isn't going to wilt like Rashad did. He'll keep pushing that pace. It's going to be a much more interesting fight than some expect.

People like to pretend that the first Silva fight never happened, and that Sonnen's losing to Anderson the second time around (aka, the greatest fighter to have lived) somehow means he isn't game. It's nonsense really.

Personally I don't think Sonnen has a chance, at least on paper it looks that way to me. Jones has shown the ability to perform under pressure, and his technique is sharp. The only way I see Chael winning this is if Jones has a brain fart, and I don't see that happening.

On the feet Jones all the way, on the ground Jones all the way. He has out-wrestled pretty much everyone I don't see Sonnen being any different. Sonnen was a big MW, but as a LHW he's average sized, while JBJ is a big LHW and will have weight and length on Sonnen. On the feet there's no question.

If Sonnen does manage to get him on his back or in a scramble, I see JBJ either getting right back up, or going for submissions. He submitted Lyoto, Belfort and Rampage - all within 2 years I think. Sonnen submitted Brian Stann, and got submitted few times himself so you have to give the grappling edge to JBJ. So for him it's pick your poison.

I wouldn't count Sonnen out. But then again, Jones' grecko is some of the best in the sport. If Jones could time his sprawl correctly, Sonnen will go for a flight... especially if you consider the size difference.

I'm pulling for Sonnen, but realistically I don't expect him to win. Jones will probably beat him everywhere except for off of his back. Even there he may have something for him.

I have never seen anyone even attempt a decent double leg on jones let alone get a hold of him at any point, sonnen at some point will do this and often he will continue with it.

#25 ·
The two things that make a big difference in my book is Jones' height/reach plus his Grecko.

Sonnen couldn't take Silva down in the second round of their last fight when Silva was aware of what was coming, so I can't imagine him having much success against a grecko machine like Jones. He might get him down a few times, but he will never get out of Jones' guard in any case because of those damn long legs :p

#26 ·
Yeah but silva had hold of the fence keeping him standing in the second round. For something like 20 seconds if i can remember correctly.
Chael will close the distance and get him down I think. Will be interesting to see jones off his back. You would think Silvas Jits game would be better then Jones with all the Nog training. For all we know though Jones being the freak that he is could be much harder to deal with on the ground.

#28 ·
Sonnen can pass guard well now, he's still got vinny magalhaes training him and he passed andersons guard into mount in the 2nd fight as well an anderson has a black belt and a decent guard

#29 ·
Although chael beating jones would accomplish two things i'm very much hopping for (embarrassing jones and proving silva is goat), I just can't see how he could pull it of.

He ain't knocking anyone out with those pillows and he definitely ain't submitting jones. I fear it's gonna go down similar to rua fight. Chael will probably shoot right away, walking head first into a knee. I predict a second round finish.

Bones' timing isn't that good and he's never caught anybody while they're shooting before. One thing that strangely happens to the wrestlers that Bones faces is they forget their gameplan once they enter the octagon. Chael is the kind of guy that will walk through Bones' strikes and do his best to drag him to the mat. I think he can take him down, I hope he can hold him down and I really hope Vinny's got his submission defense up to par, I dunno.. For some reason i'm feeling the upset.

That being said, if Chael can't get Bones down then he loses in a bad way.

No one so far has been able to walk through JBJ's strikes, I don't see Sonnen being any different. JBJ is great at controlling distance, Rua - Page - Evans fights show that. I agree with the other poster in that this will be like his fight with Rua even though Rua and Sonnen are completely different fighters with different styles. Sonnen is going to be left crumbling on the floor.

#33 ·
The first fight Sonnen landed some punches without a doubt but I doubt AS was coming at full force. He admitted in training camp leading up to the first fight that his plan was to submit him no matter what for disrespecting Nog's BJJ with the happy meal joke. People can call that a fluke, but when a man is known for knocking out people left and right openly says he wants to submit someone (before the fight happens) and does so I take his word for it.

Not to mention the night and day difference between the first and second fight.

#34 ·
I know my sig is different now but I am probably Anderson's biggest fan here.

I'm talking about the second fight. Anderson came out swinging, Chael walked through it and took him down, then held him there for the rest of the round. 2nd round Anderson kept his hands down and threw hard strikes but they didn't discourage Chael from shooting huge doubles.

Bones doesn't have the 1 punch power or timing to catch Chael coming in and KO him, but if he can stuff the shots he will take Chael to school.

#36 ·
Yeah I see where you are coming from. I don't know if JBJ has one punch ko (hasn't shown it so far), but he strikes aren't pillows either, Shogun can attest to that. He can catch Sonnen with an elbow or flying knee coming in, he's very versatile. Obviously Sonnen will try and pressure the fight, but I am not sure he has what it takes to muscle JBJ down.

Candian Psycho -

I'm a Sonnen fan, but you can't be serious. Sonnen fans have NO say when it comes to dirty tactics and unfair advantages, I mean the guy has been caught doping it up how more a cheater do you need to be? How can you say you have no respect for a fighter for using tactics to land an unfair advantage (debatable if it was done purposely) when you have the king of that as your avatar?

Silva did hold those shorts on purpose and Sonnen deserved it for his inconsequent mouth. If Sonnen would take Silva down on the second round he probably would keep him there to the end of it and he would be finished on the third as followed TD attempts were all stuffed legally. His only chance was to boringly outscoring Anderson anyway.

If Anderson hamburgered Sonnen's face from the bottom, Jones can do the same, so I hope Sonnen is working in a solution for the case his plan works and he finds himself on Jones guard.

#40 ·
Not the amount he was taking nor for the intended reasons. What were his levels again? Wasn't he suspended or was about to get suspended? Why would they suspend him for a "legal" substance?

#42 ·
Are you honestly going to argue that TRT isn't a legal substance? How many fighters are using TRT right now and are still permitted to fight?

Go and rewatch the inquiry. Sonnen wasn't suspended for using TRT. He was suspended for failing to report his use of TRT. That's hardly classified information.
