The more I watch the latest season of TUF the more I am amazed at what a likable and smart dooshbag he is - with excellent insight and a genuine passion for the UFC, his team and "fist fights" generally.

I always knew there was more to Sonnen than an ability to hype and sell fights - but who knew he was so darn likable?

When Chael retires from fighting, there is absolutely no way the UFC let's him go anywhere - IMO that man has a job for life within the organization.

"They'll tell you 'failure is not an option'. That is ridiculous, failure is always an option. Failure is the most readily available option at all times; but it's a choice. You can choose to fail or you can choose to succeed."
Thought that was a really good quote from Chael. Can't help but think Jones wouldn't have been able to help Uriah the way Sonnen did.

well yeah, chael's got a lot of experience with failure. he was born into an extremely wealthy and affluent family and had every advantage growing up, yet in terms of his actual accomplishments, he's a felon (who rolled on his partners in conspiracy to avoid jail time, and destroyed his chances of becoming a politician which should have been hilariously easy coming from his pedigree), a fighter with only a decent record and a serious weakness to submission, someone who has made public statements and then lied to cover them up, oh, and had some suspect fake tap moments. that's a lot of failure to cope with in a lifetime.

gaining the respect of people through carefully scripted media comedy and camera editing is extremely impressive though and i can see how he feels like he overcame adversity there, so his statement hits me deep inside my heart as well.

what makes you think his family was wealthy? I seriously doubt that since he grew up in a black neighborhood Statistically speaking that probably means he didn't grow up rich.

Hexrei has always had the hatorade for chael so nothing ne wthere, i'm just shocked that people are shocked that there's 2 different chaels and they are both brilliant

There are also those who are so annoyed by fight hype Chael that we still won't like him anyways. I'm one of them. I really hate that man after listening to him talk from one loss to Anderson to another.

That being said he comes off like a god damned genius and good human being when shown next to Jones. And it's the one fight I will root for Chael. For - while I dislike loud mouthed would be comedians - I despise hypocritical arrogant assholes.

This is an opinion I can respect. Fight hype Chael has a way of turning some people off of him. I think you're also right about the way he comes off against Jones. If I was on TUF this season, I'd feel slighted if I was on Bones' team, not just because I hate the man. Chael has the experience and a way with words that is second to none in terms of motivating, when he wants to.

I concur. Chael fighting Anderson was a royal penis x 10. Afterwards a bit better...but still a dikhead to a lesser degree. He's shown to be a much better coach than you know who and it's not just the losses or wins. He's more seasoned and knows the ups and downs of course thanks to Anderson.

Frank Mir is the laziest coach. Every scene shows him lounging around. He's like a whale...a beached whale.

If Chael beats em that probably would be the biggest upset in history next to GSP vs Serra followed by Fedor vs Werdum.

Chael was never a dickhead your wrong and therefore as captain of the sonnen war wagon est. 2009 you don't have my permission to ever be on his side of a fight. And yes I agree Killz chael defiantly is one of the top coaches in tuf history looking back, wandy surprisingly one of the worst

Its tough to get an accurate read on Chael. You see pre-fight Chael and want to puke in your mouth, then you see coach Chael and think he's amazing. I am willing to bet if he was your close friend he would do anything for you but anything out of close friend I tend to believe that he'd sell you down the river when you least expected it.

Chael's net worth is estimated around 750K. not quite billionaire rich. His dad has been dead for more than 10 years. I don't know how dirt poor the people of Oregon are to be impressed by those rich guys at the masonic lodge. Around here they might average a little bit richer than the guys at the Moose Lodge. Not much

A guy can be a dick without being one to every random guy that crosses his path.

In general I'd say his dozens of misdeeds, steroid/TRT use, mudslinging, family and xenophopic insults, cheap antics and reputation in his own community count for more than some scripted crap and jokes he tells on a reality TV show, but maybe that's just me.

No one has said that Chael Sonnen is the salt of the earth. I think he legitimately disliked Anderson and took the mudslinging a bit far, but then we've all been guilty of that. I'm not particularly mean spirited, but I can get downright nasty with those people who rub me the wrong way. That itself doesn't make me a bad person.

And if - in this day and age - a little bit of money laundering makes someone evil, then I imagine you're seriously sheltered from the realities of the world. I'd say drunk driving is a worse offence. Not that I condone criminal activity, but some perspective is always nice.

Steroid/TRT use... yeah, I guess 3/4s of the MMA profession is filled with bad seeds.

Again, no one said the man is a saint. Chael's done and said some messed up things. But that doesn't mean that he's incapable of showing respect or helping others.

3/4th of the mma world is on TRT? I would be quite impressed to see a source on that one, but I suspect we are both aware you pulled that one outta your ass. Even counting the 5-6 known TRT users on the ufc's roster, that's less than 3% of their total.

When did I say Chael is capable of no good? I mentioned his positive qualities in my first post didn't I? All this "Chael's a great guy" and "It's all an act lawlz" is a bunch of bollocks. Based on so much evidence, the guy is decidedly middle of the road, firmly across the line of douche but well shy of the line of "evil" which you guys are trying to put in my mouth.

And yes if you go around mudslinging against someone's wife and country to his face without any direct provocation from the person himself.to you, just because you "dislike" him, then it makes you kind of a douche too.

That's where repentance makes a difference. Jones publicly apologized for his actions and there is no sign of such foolishness from him since.

Chael continues to Juice/TRT, made his crass "medium rare" comment about anderson's wife in the post fight presser even after curling up in a ball less an hour before, made jokes about his arrest, continues to be a disrespectful douche in general.

Thats the difference

Yes, I'm terribly 'butt-hurt'. You can think whatever you like of Chael, as is the majesty of freedom of opinion. It doesn't affect me one way or the other. You simply made it sound as though most of us view him as the second coming of Mother Teresa, which is far from true. I've seen very, very few people here refer to Chael as a saint. Some have maybe said, 'He's generally a nice guy with some quirks', but that's about it. You blew things out of proportion and got called on it. That doesn't make anyone 'butt-hurt'.

And you're right, Brock never cut promos...

To that sir:

All the people that liked chael already knew he was a great guy and was only acting
Some people are just jealous of his greatness
Hexrei has always had the hatorade for chael so nothing ne wthere, i'm just shocked that people are shocked that there's 2 different chaels and they are both brilliant
Not quite Mother Teresa, but close.

Brock didn't bring families or countries into it, or use TRT/Steroids (within his UFC career at least), or fake tap, or even go after anyone who didn't go after him first (Mir and Herring). Different story.

Anyway you are free to like who you like, I just couldn't help myself in bringing some perspective into the mush fest here and letting Hex get hated on for making a legit point.

Well I don't know about you but I can't watch a fight I have no feeling towards who I want to win even if I bet real money on it, I bet on the condit vs gsp fight to go GSP's way by decision but I still didn't watch it because I didn't care who won they did me no emotional reason to watch the fight out of hate or love of either fighter.

#47 ·
GSP vs Condit is a bad example because GSP is just so dominant and it wasn't a very likely upset. It's not that interesting to watch when there isn't a whole lot of mystery, bad blood has less to do with it.

You wouldn't watch a Bones vs Anderson fight just because they don't hate each other? I'd pay 3 times as much for that as I'd pay for any bad blood fight. It's about the skills, not how much crap they talk.

Sonnen vs Anderson II was interesting because of the 4.5 rounds of pounding in the first fight against a guy that looked invincible. Phil baroni talks crap all he wants but no one cares.

You can watched a skilled fight anywhere like bellator or an asian promotion etc but noone wants to on a large scale because there is no real bad blood or feeling and promotion for that. Thats how all the biggest draws become big draws with the exception of GSP, they all provoke and insult like mayweather and margarito was a good draw and tyson and ali.
