UFC 158 PPV numbers expected to top 800,000 buys
By Mookie Alexander on Mar 20 2013, 3:09p

Early indicators suggest that this past weekend's UFC 158 PPV will reach 800,000 buys, one of the highest Georges St. Pierre has ever had as a headliner.

The preliminary numbers are in for the UFC 158 PPV buyrate, and they look very promising. Dave Meltzer at MMA Fighting reports the show, which was headlined by Georges St. Pierre's triumphant decision win over Nick Diaz, is expected to top 800,000 buys.

Saturday's UFC 158 may wind up being the biggest pay-per-view event UFC's top draw, Georges St-Pierre, has done on his own with preliminary indications that the show will top 800,000 buys.

The show was expected to be the company's most successful show since July's UFC 148 with Anderson Silva's return match with Chael Sonnen. St-Pierre had done numbers in the 750,000 to 800,000 range in previous fights with B.J. Penn, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields, but this show is expected to finish slightly ahead of those fights.

The buzz surrounding this card translated well both in the US and in Canada. Rogers Sportsnet in Canada averaged 412,000 viewers for the preliminary card, breaking the previous record set at UFC 154, also a GSP-headlined card. The FX average for the same prelim special averaged just under 1.6 million, the 3rd highest in network history. Ratings for the weigh-ins on Fuel TV averaged 215,000 viewers, the highest number they've ever achieved for a weigh-ins broadcast.

GSP's last fight against Carlos Condit reportedly pulled 700k buys. Based on the PPV buys and the TV ratings since his return in November, it's evident that he is still MMA's most consistently reliable audience draw in the sport today.

Penn vs Diaz did 280K, Condit vs Diaz did ~400K in PPV sales .... GSP vs Diaz did 800K.

GSP's 7 PPV headlines pulled in between 625K and 1.6M (UFC 100, with Lesnar on the main event, so not all GSP's doing.)

And somehow we are to believe a large part of that 800K was Diaz?

Even Condit and Hendricks draw as good or better than Diaz

Johny Hendricks

UFC 133 310,000 (vs. Mike Pierce)
UFC 141 535,000 (vs. Jon Fitch)
UFC 154 700,000 (vs. Martin Kampman)

Carlos Condit

UFC 132 320,000 (vs. Kim Dong-Hyun)
UFC 143 400,000 (vs. Diaz)
UFC 154 700,000 (vs. GSP)

It is hilarious that you use fights like Hendrick/Pierce and Condit/Kim as if they sold those PPVs. Yea, UFC 141 didn't sell because of Brock vs. Overeem. It was all because of Hendricks/Fitch.

Your logic is laughable.

No, Diaz/GSP didn't sell much more than vs Shields or Hardy. But if you would do a little more research you would understand that the golden era of PPV sales as passed. 500,000 buys is good numbers these days. 500,000 a couple of years ago would have been a very average PPV. People don't buy PPVs as a whole as much as they used too. Streaming and the amount of events is probably a good reason why.

You mean besides the elite PPV draw magnets like Hardy (770K) and Shields (800K) when they fought GSP?

So you rank Diaz right up there with Hard and Shields in terms of draw power? I'm impressed /sarcasm

I'm certain Diaz helped bump it up a lil' bit. Lots of talk & hype leading up to this one. Maybe it was just because the first go-around got cancelled, too - who knows. Gotta give Diaz some cred, nonetheless.

I'm definitely a Diaz hater, but dammit if that kid got his head screwed on right & surrounded himself with different people, he'd be so much better off right now...

While Blockbusters, Tower Records and a whole sleu of other brick and mortar companies are going out of business Zuffa is on an upward surge. Amazing really!

While I agree that CW has more to offer then Maia and Leites I wouldn't put much hope past that LL. MMA math never works and neither does trying to bully Anderson. I would love to see someone actually push Silva again but I am not too sure its Weidman.

As far as the MMA vs boxing thing goes I would say boxing is still very relevant and has some big rising stars. Sure their HW is the shits but everything from around 126 lb up to LHW are fantastic to watch. At least I have been enjoying it right now.

800k plus buys for anything is a big deal in my opinion whether its GSP, Brock, Silva or any main eventer. Of course Floyd is a bigger draw, boxing is still mainstream with a much bigger long term following.

I think after the Nick Diaz fight any other card with GSP headlining will get much lower PPV numbers around 650k or lower.. he looked horrible and I was bored to death watching that shet and was just hoping Nick diaz would knock him the fk out and give the middle finger stockholm style lol

Eh I don't buy the 1.1 million number. If he was that confident in it, he would have posted an article on Yahoo breaking the news, not responding to a question on Facebook.

Not taking anything away from GSP, with Brock gone, he's the biggest draw they have. But I'll wait until more reliable numbers come out. Not saying Meltzer is the most reliable, but I'd trust him over a response on Facebook.
