Well, since the general public was on the huge Silva hype train you could get a good odds betting Weidman. This since Weidman was relatively unknown for the broad masses. Also take into account that many of the top UFC fighters (GSP, Gustafsson etc) predicted Weidman winning.

So probably someone with a lot of money started believing what the fighters said. Probably the guy who made that bet had seen Weidman on training sessions as well.

I say, congrats on a great and huge bet win!

Its either somebody extremely rich who a couple million bucks means nothing to, or its some gangsters that got a hold of silva and made him throw the fight.

Its not that far fetched, I mean it was par for the course in Pride days.

The issue with something like this if indeed there is some funny business, is not the fighter wanting to throw the fight, its someone forcing him to throw the fight! A lot of kidnapping in Brazil, countless sports stars family have been taken, Belfort included. So while unlikely it's certainly not beyond reality that there could be a criminal element involved

Is that serious question? Obviously no.
The mere question itself was serious. I don't know much about the betting business and whether a fighter would be allowed to bet on himself (I doubted they were allowed, but wasn't sure). The Weidman imagination was not serious of course.

In the UK no sports person is allowed to bet on their own sport full stop. Doesn't matter what the bet is for. If you are involved in the sport then the bookies consider you to have inside information. Just recently a footie player got banned for 4 months for betting on football.
Ok, makes sense.

Nevada Gaming Control Board shoots down rumored $1 million bet on Chris Weidman, investigation

The end result of UFC 162's main event was so stunning, the internet exploded with bizarre theories and rumors soon afterward. From Anderson Silva throwing the fight to the idea that he simply had no interest in winning, baseless speculation was abundant.

One rumor that gained steam came from the offbeat website MiddleEasy.com, which posted an item saying that "someone allegedly bet $1 million on Chris Weidman" in Las Vegas, and that the wager was being investigated.

That quickly gained steam. Brazil's influential Globo wrote about it soon afterward, and several American sites soon followed. The implication, given the unusually large wager, was that something was amiss. It got so bad that major sites felt compelled to offer reasons why Silva wouldn't throw the fight.

The thing is, there is zero proof of the bet's existence. In fact, the man who would have knowledge of such a thing had never even heard of the rumor, let alone the bet.

Nevada Gaming Control Board chief of enforcement Jerry Markling confirmed to MMA Fighting that his agency, which is tasked with criminal investigations related to gaming activities, is not looking into any $1 million wager related to UFC 162.

"While I cannot give you specific information about ongoing investigations, I can tell you that the Gaming Control Board is not investigating any dispute involving UFC 162 and a wager of that amount," he said. "In addition, we do not have any information of any book having accepted a wager of that size on that event."

One rumor debunked, but many others may continue to persist in some form. For those of us who refuse to wear tinfoil hats in the summertime, at least the possibility of a rematch has grown from doubtful to possible to probable in the days since the fight.
