well I grew up with 2 older brothers, when we fought id do bjj, not that I knew what bjj was back then but rear naked chokes and armbars you pick up on pretty quickly when getting your ass kicked, saw the mau thai clinch done, so I tried it, man is it perfect.

I have no credentials, but I'll put a rear naked choke on ya no problem, id hold my own in any type of clinch

With anybody? :sarcastic09: I bet you couldn't stay in a clinch for more than 5 minutes though, what with all that dope you smoke ;)
with anybody? hell no, but there is a mau thai gym in my area, I **** up black belts in the clinch, but in alot of my street fights ive fucked alot of people up, think franklin or leben got fucked up by silvas clinch? atleast they were able to somewhat defend themselves, I went up against street fighters that didnt know what to do other then recieve multiple knees in the face, they try something just move them a bit, you get such an unbelievable advantage with your hands wrapped around the back of there neck, move them left or right if they try to knee/punch/grab you then knee them some more

I love the power you feel in the clinch

but if I were to go up against anderson silva and I was able to clinch him first, im sure id still get my ass tuned.

I feel u man. I feel so in control when i get someone in a clinch especially in a streetfight. Im a kickboxer though i dont know how different that is from muay tai. But we obviously use the clinch often and i love the control and ownership of your opponent you feel from in the clinch.

Well firstly, you don't put your hands around their neck. Secondly, there's no such thing as a black belt in Muay Thai.

And to answer Regiments question, Kruang Ruang are the armbands around your bicep, the Western Thai Boxing gyms equivalent to Belts. So basically it's just a grading system. You have to complete techniques and sparring sessions to earn them, but in Thailand they don't exist to my knowledge, and are given by the Kru to the Student as a form of good luck for the fight.

AFIK, anyway.

Yeah a guy called Master Sken started it all off. You have to pay to grade though which is a bitch. That's why I was thinking of switching to MMA mostly.
my gyms mma and we still have gradings....my sensei was trained in traditional jiu jitsu then later bjj under carlson gracie.....so our jiu jitsu sessions are pretty traditional....lots of sparring and lots of philosophy/lectures which i like....for our mma gradings our belt levels go white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, red, brown, black, so for our gradings we do half jiu jitsu...with open sparring showing the techniques then an intense sparring session in a "death circle" lol thats wat i call it.....then standup sparring in the same circle...i guess even though its mma we still use belt levels so we can go to tournaments and stuff

Yeah they do gradings in my new mma gym too, but you don't HAVE to do them :)

Been training for a year and a half, dont grade. Club I train with isnt rly into the political side of things coloured bands and what martial art is better type shit.

We just drill the basics hard. High Kick, leg kick, boxing, Knees and lots of clinch work.

No record as of yet plan on fighting before the end of the year tho. Need to sort out my weight etc first.

i've been training for just over a month now.

our gym has a grading system split into 10 levels

1-3 being novice, 4-7 intermediate, 7-9 advanced and 10 being pro level.

i've graded once, for level 1
next grading is in august, hoping i can knock out level 2 and 3 on the same day.

lol yeah, level stuff is very easy, our lil group of level 1 guys got through the level 2 stuff 2 weeks ago in about 30 mins, have been doing level 3 stuff since then, we got lucky as well one of the part time trainers been coming in a lot lately, his fought and trained in Thailand and he pushes us really hard, none of the other trainers have ever pushed us that hard before lol i love it.

at out gym its a rule that only in level 4 and above are able to fight in semi contact gym spars (with other gyms around the state) so my goal for the end of the year is to get to at least level 4, the next grading is aug 10 (which i hope to double grade in level 2+3) then the one after that is in i think october/nov which ill be going for level 4 if all goes well.

Its essential for me to double grade this time around and make the level 4 grading to fight in the last gym spar of the year in december, i've made it a goal of mine to get into fighting condition and get in the ring by the end of the year.

obscura1560 how long have you been training for now?

I've been training for about 2 months now. We don't have grades or anything like that, which is one of the reasons I like Muay Thai.

Do you learn certain techniques at different stages? If so, it sure is more organized than how we learn. I'm not sure if the instructor has a lesson plan. It just seems like we just learn stuff as we go. My friend has been training for over 4 years though, so he teaches me stuff we haven't learned =P

yep its fully structured for us, you learn certain skills before your able to progress and learn others, grading isn't required, it's optional but they give you a report card, so its worth it to see what skills you've learned properly and where you need to improve on.

i don't understand a thing about this grading stuff.
Fairtex doesn't do that kinda stuff.
it's been my 4th month training now, i'm 17 years old, and i can't wait till i train more and start preparing for some fights =].

btw, how did you fighters get into it? what was the process like? i figure i'd ask here instead of starting a new thread to further my knowledge about this stuff.

How did I get into it? Well, all my mates were doing Ninjutsu (or Bujinkan) so I went to try that out. It was just the gayest thing ever, takes years and years and years to master, and then when you've mastered it, you can't go around assassinating people or becoming invisible. And who needs to dodge swords in this day and age?

So I thought I'd look for some clubs that do contact martial arts in my area. One that popped out on the page was Sitpinyo Muay Thai, which was relatively close to my house, and I took two friends with me to join in. Since then, I've become better than most of the club, bar a couple of lads who've been doing it for years longer than me, we've got a new trainer, and I ******* love the art :thumb02:

Oh, and the 2 lads that I took with me? Yeah, they're some fat bastards who drink too much now.

Muay Thai eventually broadened into Submission Wrestling, cause I wanted to improve my self defense work on the ground. I got into a fight just knowing Muay Thai and had to keep squirming my way out of this fat guys grasp before I could stand up again and punch him to shit. I plan to start fighting Muay Thai by next year, hopefully in Thailand with someone who isn't Thai or Dutch :D

I'm also blabbing on, let's hear your stories

I've been training for about 5 months now. I just posted one of my videos from a couple of months back in another thread in here. I'll test for my 4th level in about a month. I'm halfway there. I love it and I'm stationed in S Korea right now so I train 5 days a week. Keeps me out of trouble :) I didn't start until I was 30. Didn't realize how bad of shape I was in until the first day. Thought I was gonna die.

Muay Thai grading

There's no official grading in Muay Thai....only a fight record. The head bands and arm bands are worn before the fight during the traditional 'wai kru,' which is a dance that is performed before the start of each bought by the fighters. It dates back hundreds of years to a war between Thailand and Burma. Check out www.tigermuaythai.com

Thailand's doing it's best to bring Muay Thai and MMA together.

That kind of goes along with what I've heard many Muay Thai fighters say "the only belt or sash you get is earned in the ring". Hopefully I'll get mine sometime in the future.....
