UFC 174: Demetrious Johnson vs Ali Bagautinov

Round 1 – Johnson with an early low kick. Bagautinov with a wide stance in the center of the cage. Bagautinov throwing a few fakes to start, checking Johnson’s movement. Johnson kicks the legs, and Bagautinov rattles off counter punches that come up just short. Nice Bagautinov kick to the body. Johnson slips a punch and lands a crisp right. Johnson switching stances and holding the center. Bagautinov looking to unleash with power. He does, but Johnson easily evades the shots. They move into the clinch, and Bagautinov is able to move to the outside position. Johnson tries to throw a knee inside, but Bagautinov wraps his leg. Stalemate against the cage, but Bagautinov is the one holding the outside spot. Johnson defending well and working in a few short knees. He circles off the cage. More knees from Johnson. Bagautinov elevates and scores alate takedown, but Johnson pops back up before the bell. MMAjunkie gives the first to Johnson, 10-9.

Round 2 – Johnson out quickly, and he kicks the legs. He’s pressing the action a bit and drives inside. Bagautinov defends well. Johnson briefly works knees from the clinch. Bagautinov fights off the cage with a nice flurry that largely misses. Johnson fires in a few kicks that are blocked. Bagautinov keeping up with the pace for now, but Johnson has just a touch more volume. Johnson lands a big right hand. Bagautinov shakes it off, but that was a clean shot. Bagautinov fighting agains the cage. He changes levels, and Johnson sees it and kicks him. Bagautinov still gets inside, where he looks to work from the clinch. Johnson the busier fighter from the position, working in knees. Bagautinov staying right there, hunting for the takedown that won’t come. They finish against the fence, and MMAjunkie sees it again for Johnson, 10-9.

Round 3 – Johnson starts out to the legs again. Bagautinov’s lead leg is reddened, and Johnson is continuing to soften it up. Johnson lets his hands go and slips the counter. He sees Bagautinov ducking down and again turns to the kick. Bagautinov does get inside and secure the clinch. Crowd boos a bit, and they break apart. Johnson with a nice kick to the body. He’s switching stances and scores again with the right hand. Bagautinov answers with one of his own, but Johnson walks through it. Johnson scores with two punches and slips the counter. Textbook work and incredible speed. Johnson continues to chop at the leg. Bagautinov finally gets hold of Johnson and slams him to the floor, but Johnson is immediately back on his feet and working to get away. Bagautinov is running out of options. He pushes inside, but Johnson knees him in the clinch. Scramble on a trip attempt, and Johnson gets the better of it. Round ends, and MMAjunkie gives it to Johnson, 10-9.

Round 4 – Johnson right back to the leg. He drops down for a takedown, but Bagautinov pushes him away. He shoots in from range, and while Bagautinov defends, Johnson still tags him as he lets go and pulls away. Johnson whiffs on a right hand. Bagautinov still hunting for a power shot that could change things up, but Johnson’s motor is non-stop. Johnson shoots again and finishes with a knee as Bagautinov defends it. Johnson scores with a kick to the body. He slips on another kick, and Bagautinov does score with a solid right hand. Johnson stops briefly then turns it back on. Bagautinov gets inside and works hard in the clinch. They scramble late, and Johnson gets to the back as they fall to the floor. Bell sounds and Bagautinov is slow to rise. His nose is bloodied. MMAjunkie again gives it to Johnson, 10-9.

Round 5 – Bagautinov asks the crowd for a little love to start the final round. He walks out and hugs Johnson, and the fifth is underway. Bagautinov loading up, looking for that big shot. Johnson keeps his pace high, darting in and out of range. Bagautinov gets inside and is able to scoop up his opponent’s right leg. Johnson defends against the cage and will not be brought to the floor. Johnson circles off the cage. He lads a few knees inside. Bagautinov is fading. He’s fought valiantly, but Johnson’s speed is just too much. Johnson continues to score in the clinch with knees to the body. Bagautinov trying to grind away, but Johnson is non-stop. Bagautinovslips a spinning kick. They break away with a little more than 40 seconds eft. Johnson with a high kick and he’s back into the clinch. Bagautinov looking for anything, but Johnson is too much. Round ends, and MMAjunkie gives it to Johnson, 10-9, awarding him the fight 50-45.

Result: Demetrious Johnson def. Ali Bagautinov via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) to retain UFC flyweight title
