Breathing Technique?

I have watched fights and when listening, I hear the fighters make a sound while throwing a kick or punch which I now know is them breathing. How is the breathing done in kickboxing and muay thai? I assumed it was an exhale through clinched teeth but any help and referances would be great.

when i kick or punch or do any technique with alot of concentration behind it, i breathe out hard, It's only meant to keep you breathing because sometimes you hold your breathe while in the middle of throwing combinations or kicking pads. Nothing else really i can tell you about it, it's not something that's taught.

The easiest way with the mouthpiece is breathe in through your nose and breathe out through mouth.

If like me you're used to breathing only through your mouth when training, it takes a tiny bit of practice but once you're familiar with that, it as easy as ABC

As has already been mentioned, it's best to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. You will be able to exert harder if you exhale while exerting .. for example, if you notice someone benching some heavy weight, they'll always puff out hard while pushing up.. this helps your body create more pressure. Imagine trying to push something while inhaling in.. would take away from the pushing wouldn't it? So basically, exhale when you strike or exert your strength hard in any way.

Also, the hissing sound you probably heard is guys exhaling through clenched teeth. This is for good defense.. you can take a much harder blow to the jaw without getting KOd if it is clenched and tight than if it is slack. It hardly takes any power to KO a guy with his jaw hanging loose, because the sideways snapping of the jaw or the neck is what pulls on the "lights out" nerve that connects to the brain.

Also, understand that when you attack, you automatically open up your defences. If your opponent manages to slip a punch and nail you in the body, chances are, if you're holding your breath his blow will knock the wind out of you and we all know that's not cool. This risk is however eliminated when you exhale quickly during your own attack.

And, like Liddellianenko said, you will be able to exert harder while exhaling. This goes for punches too. You'll use less energy throwing a hard right straight while exhaling than while holding your breath or breathing in. You may also find your punches, especially your jabs, will be much quicker and stronger, provided this technique is accompanied with proper form of course.
