Who should Sherk's 1st title defense be against?

If Stevenson wins at UFC 65, does that put him at the top of the list?

I don't think that Jens has a chance in hell. Even though JLau might have been a fluke, he still showed how sloppy his fighting style is. I don't think he'll get a shot for a while, and if he does I will not be happy about it.

Stevenson might be next in line, but I do think he should fight another top contender first, just to see how good he really is and whether he even has a chance in hell at stopping Sherk.

Spencer should probably be the guy fighting Joe, and I think he can actually win that fight and get a shot the title. He is a solid fighter and his knees are brutal. The worst big KO weapon for a wrestler to face are those knees, so that could actually get kind of interesting.

I think Guillard may have the best chance of all of these guys at beating Sherk. He's training with team Punishment now, so he's rounding himself out as a fighter. I think he's the most athletic fighter in the lightweight division and his explosiveness has been pretty shocking, especially lately. But he's young, so I think he'll take a few more fights to mature and really establish himself. Still, he's going to do great things in this division.

They shouldn't have a title fight yet. They should have the division battle it out for a bit. The fighters with the best record and most exciting fights should be ranked as such and then we play "king of the hill".

Truthfully, Joe Stevenson hasn't impressed me; they made him seem like some sort of phenom and he isn't. Jens Pulver was sloppy. Spencer Fisher and Melvin G. are exciting but they need more fights before they go for a belt. The Lauzon are good new additions. Let them duke it out for a buit and then start giving people shots for the belt. In my opinion, the UFC puts people up for the belt so quickly that you end up with peoplequestioning who deserves a shot constantly. Make them really earn it and keep them hungry.

I hope Guillard will get it because he'd put up the best fight but Spencer Fisher is also coming up and should maybe get a title shot if he beats someone with a name.
i think melvin should get a shot just not yet. give him like two more fights. right now i think joe stevenson should be next depending on how he does in his next fight. then spencer then melvin.

I've said this before. If Guillard and Stevenson bot continue to win, it would be really unfair to Stevenson if Guillard got the shot first. They both have one loss since TUF and they were both to Josh Neer at WW. Since Stevenson won TUF that Guillard was in he should get it before Melvin. Whether Melvin is more exciting or not.

Stevenson has a W over Yves Edwards, which is more impressive than anything Guillard has shown.

I'll agree with you that we shouldn't be throwing people in for a title shot, but I WOULD like to see Sherk defending the belt at least 2 times a year. If the UFC doesn't have the competition to test him, they should try to bring it in from other organizations.

Yeah Edwards is a way better fighter than anyone Melvin's faced. Guillard really hasnt proven anything yet except that he's exciting.

All good points. I haven't seen any impressive wins from the guys who are "the ones to watch". I want to see a good technical fight stoppage due to submission, strikes or knockout. Alot of split and decisions have been coming out of that division. Also, I haven't heard anyone say anything about Hermes Franca. Now, that guy puts on a show! Very quick with a great ground game.

True. Maelvin G. is a very big LW fighter. He needs some more development and he could be a force in that division. I just think these guys each have alot to prove because the talent in that division is so deep. Plus, They should have Sherk fight again in January once these guys start proving themselves.

I bet they put Melvin in ahead of Stevenson because of the marketing aspect. Cocky kid vs. the seasoned veteran wrestler. Joe Stevenson is a mirror image of Sherk, just without the muscle tone. Both are wrestlers, limited striking capability. I give the edge to Stevenson in submissions though. If they do a title fight soon, I hope it's a good matchup. I hate when fights go to decision. All we end up doing is hypothesizing who the true champ is.

I would love to see Melvin v. Stevenson but I don't think people are going to be thinking Cocky kid v. Seasoned Veteran Wrestler...I mean, weren't they on the same season of TUF? Melvin is cocky, ridiculously cocky. But I still like Melvin more then Stevenson because I think Joe is smug. I hate smug.

Melvin has unquestionable talent, he is a force. I question his intellingence. No one talks about it because of Melvins devasting KO body punch last fight, but he had a chance to finish it first round and started celebrating and next thing you know, this guy has his back!!!! If that happened with any of the people were talking about here, he would have been done.

Fisher definantly has a chance of getting the title and I guess possibly Pulver aswell. Pulver may have lost his last fight pathetically but he was the only UFC champ before the LW divison was taken away so I would figure its only fare to give him a shot at the title. Out of all the LW in the race for a title shot I like Guillard the most but I wanna see him beat someone worth while. His last opponent was a tough dude but I wanna see Guillard beat somone with contender status in the UFC before ganing a title shot. I see Guillard giving Sherk a run for his money in time.

I agree that Stevenson and Guillard are both up there. They're both getting close to deserving a shot. I don't know who would be a contender at this point in the Lightweight class. I'd have to guess Stevenson, Guillard and Spencer Fisher are up there.

I say:

Stevenson vs Guillard

Winner vs Fisher for #1 Contender

Winner vs Sherk

But obviously, this would put Sherk's first defence a ways down the road. So I guess they should see who of the three have the best chance/would make the better fight against Sherk.

Personally, I'd equally like to see Stevenson or Guillard get a title shot.

I dont think Sherk is going to fight next untill feb.

Just my opinion, maybe jan.

I personally think it will be against Joe Stevenson (if he wins this next fight).

Or Spencer Fischer, reason i say not joe stevenson is hed only have like 2 months to train after his next fight.

But we'll see eh?

If stevenson couldnt beat Neer I doubt he could beat Guillard. I understand that Neer did catch Guillard but I still see Guillard as a better fighter. All the best fighters get caught eventually.

I would love to see Melvin fight Sherk, but he needs to fight someone who is already established in the UFC first, like Stevenson. His shot will be a ways down the road still.
It is still too early for me to pass judgement on Joe just yet, I want to see how he performs in his next fight, and then go from there.
Mark Hominick should fight Melvin for the number 1 spot, and George should fight Fisher...

i think too many of these TUF guys win one or two fights and get thrown in the title picture. Joe and Melvin should at least win 2 more fights then have a crack at Sherk. Both on a good day stand a decent chance. When is Sam Stout fighting next.....Fisher should be in the mix after anothe win also. Florian may also be there but prob not for 9-12 months after just losing. Jens need to get back on the horse also and fight soon - hopefully UFC 66.
