If you watched DREAM 4 on HDNet, you were amazed by the submission move Shinya Aoki pulled out of his bag of tricks. Bas Rutten was commentating and said he had never seen a submission like that ever before - it was a version of gogoplata from the top position.

We here are Five Ounces of Pain are dubbing it the “Aokiplata” (read more here)

UPDATE- some clarification on the move requested by readers - Aoki is in the mount position. Opponent on his back. Aoki wrapped his right leg UNDER the left shoulder of Nagata, then placed the top of his right foot on Nagata’s throat. He’s then pulling on the back of his opponents head, to force pressure on the throat into the foot.

as i watched that sub i was going "uhhhh......what the hell was that !?!?! ". I have to admit i wasnt that into Aoki but after hearing among others Damone going on about him ive watched all i could come over and....MAN , this guy with some awsome standup could be p4p best in the world

He definately got the p4p best ground game in MMA that's fo sho. One could make the argument that BJ has more sount technique, but Aoki is just too amazing for me to neglect his spot as the p4p best ground fihgter in the world.

Too bad for you though he subbed your countryman Joachim Hansen, so I can understand you are not totally into him yet... But Joachim is awesome, Aoki is awesome, Rainbow pants are awesome and gogo's are freaking exuberent, so there you go.

Aoki is awesome and is the best fighter in the world right now.
Even with horrendous standup? I know he will jump into guard when standing but I feel there are guys that he would have an extremely hard time doing this too.

It wasn't til I read about it here on the forum that I realized Aoki got the gogo from mount. Rewatched the fight and my jaw dropped. That sub was about as offbeat as they come. Definitely a contender for SOTY. At first, I was like - what the hell?! - NECK CRANK?:confused05:

This sub was extremely ironic because my friends and I were wondering if it was even possible to do a gogo from mount exactly 3 days before the fight when we were training at a gym. I watched the fight and immediately called my friend and just said, "You won't believe what just happened!"

Don't get me wrong, the sub was swankness, but Rumina's flying armbar was just perfect. So fast, so awesome. Best sub ever.

Even with horrendous standup? I know he will jump into guard when standing but I feel there are guys that he would have an extremely hard time doing this too.
His striking is getting better. He threw some decent kicks in the first JZ fight and has improved boxing. Aoki doesn't always need to jump into guard, he can just attach himself to fools, like when he just attacked himself to Kikuchi in their second fight.

That sub was awesome. I watched the fight knowing about the finish and there is a bit earlier in the fight when he is on top and mounted and tries for it but doesn't get it. So he waits until another opportunity presents itself and locks it in.

Is Aoki's jitz now sow good he decides on outlandish finishes for a fight even before he gets in the ring?

Damone,

How do you think Aoki would do against a strong wrestler like Sherk? Right now if Aoki and BJ were to fight I would pick BJ to win, how would you see that fight going as well?

I think Aoki would beat Sherk, since Sherk likes to take people down and Aoki wants peeps to do that to him. He has the best guard in MMA, and I can see him either subbing Sherk or winning a decision.

Penn, I don't know, I'm an Aoki fan boy, but Penn's a bad match-up, since his ground game is top notch and his stand-up is better (His takedown defense is top notch, too). Aoki could outwork him, though, if he attaches himself to Penn and gets to work sub attempts like he did against guys like JZ and Kikuchi.

With Sherk I think he would of learned from the BJ fight and would stand with Aoki (someone he would actually be able to stand with).

I question Aoki's heart and I think after taking some jabs from BJ and having some "takedowns" stuffed he would more or less give up (not give up but lose his willingness to really fight.)

Aoki is getting it done now, but I can't forget that first fight with JZ too fast. Calvan had the blueprint in place in that one.

Sherk/Aoki is one of those fights I think would depend on judging criteria. Either way, Shinya is the man right now at 155 outside of BJ Penn and I'm pumped for his next two fights in the tournament.
