I think he is very overated. Even though he had overcome alot of good UFC fgithers he lost to some of the ebst UFC fighters. I really don't enjoy watching him. He might have some good techneques but he gets lucky most of the time and I am glad the GSP is new welterweight champion!

I don't see how anyone can be considered over rated after overcoming "a lot of good fighters" and losing to the best. I take it that "over rated" should mean someone hasn't done anything, yet their still considered God's gift to whatever they do. I don't see that with Hughes.

He is not overrated imo. Losing to the best fighters, as you put it, should account for something. Not to mention the many title defenses he came out victorious in. That's not all luck. He just didn't happen to accidentally put GSP in an arm bar the last time they fought :p

Hughes wasn't in the match at any point in Saturdays fight, and the loss made him look extremely weak. Does it take anything away from his past triumphs? Absolutely not.

As much as I detest Country breakfast I have to disagree. I hate it when a champ loses and everyone starts shouting "Matt Hughes exposed!" and "never that good" or "he was just lucky" or "he's a can". What a bunch of loser crap. Matt was a great champ but lost to the better man. He will continue to kick ass all over UFC and possibly (a long shot imo) get the title back.

Stupid thread.

He's possibly the greatest champion in UFC history and has had more title defenses than any other champ. Every champion loses eventually and GSP was the guy to beat him and mark my words GSP will be another great champion and hold the belt for along time (unless BJ beats him). Matt Hughes is not overrated plain and simple.

Hughes is one of the greatest champions that has ever graced the sport. That is not hyperbole either. Hughes has faced everyone that has stepped in his path, and he has never EVER backed down from a challenge. He has defeated the top WW's in the world, and has put on some really exciting fights. He is the working man's fighter.

Losing to GSP doesn't tarnish his legacy. He is not overrated.

hughes will never beat gsp.
He already has actually. If you're talking about nowadays, then he probably wouldn't beat GSP. Then again, GSP is really good, and I don't see anyone dethroning him for a while.

It's amazing how people think Hughes automatically sucks(Or isn't one of the greatest) because he lost to GSP. I'm not really talking about people on here, but other places.

I did say that he was overrated and he does nothing but lay on people! But I said that more out of anger then good judgement!

Matt Hughes is anything but overrated! The man is a two time UFC welterweight champion! You said it yourself he beat really good fighters and lost to the best! What you call luck many other people would call determination and skill!

in no way is matt over rated. he got the belt at ufc 34 and held on to it until ufc 46 where he lost to bj. he then regained it and he has beaten everybody up to this point. lets also not forget that he has beaten gsp previously. he avenged his loss to penn and has beaten some really good fighters in the ufc. i do not see how you could possibly think that matt is overratted. Just because he lost to gsp people immediatly say he sucks. but what they dont realize is that everybody loses sometime and matt hughes time to lose was at ufc 65 because its not possible for him to be champion for ever, one day a younger fighter will come along and take his place and that fighter happened to be gsp.

I agree, Matt is a little cocky bastard but you can't take away what he has accomplished, everyone loves to bash a great fighter when they lose.

Any1 who was champ and lost is by definition overrated before he lost... If you would of asked that question before he lost, then i could of answered yes. Now i cant, since he lost.

A 5 time WW champion, who has a very particular 1 dimensional game, i think thats overrated(the fighting style, not Matt Hughes). As time goes by, the next champs are going to be more and more well rounded.

Matt Hughes, overrated? ahahahahaha. He gets lucky a lot? ahahahahaha oh man "wipes tears" Sorry, but luck doesn't come that often; otherwise it isn't luck.

Matt Hughes loses to GSP and suddenly he's overrated. Are we forgetting, he's already beat GSP. All the greats lose (unless you're Rocky Marciano) but the real greats come back and redeem themselves. Chuck's done it, GSP's done it, Hughes' done it. Regardless, Hughes' is already a great in my eyes. Now Hughes will have the chance of redeeming himself yet again like he did against Penn, but this time against GSP. Overrated? I think not.

Hughes has done a lot for UFC and MMA in general. The sport needed someone like him. Bash his attitude all you want. He's still a fighter, and he's served the growing sport well. He's reigned like a champion and became a headliner, someone that represented the sport and legitimized it even further.

You have no base for that comment. He has fought anyone and everyone that was put in front of him and beat all but two of them (Penn and GSP) and each of them he had beat before or in the rematch. So to say someone is overrated because they beat everyone is stupid. Anyone who can get in there and win against top fighters is not overrated. He lost to GSP because he didn't do what he is good at and tried something new against a man that would have been the champ sooner or later because he is that good as well. No one has ever been as dominante as Matt Hughes in any weight class, maybe Fedor in one or two more years.

i always said that he was overrated cuz most of is victory is against new comer or old timer. He is the same as Sherk he is over rated 2 is only 2 lost was against good decent fighter.. Im not saying matt is totaly suck but to say he was the best pound for pound in the world he way to over is head:thumbsdown:

#24 · (Edited)
well he pounded out bj penn and carlos newton, submitted jeremy horn in a grappling match in 30 seconds.

thats good enough for me. Matt hughes is not over-rated, hes one of the greatest ufc warriors ot ever enter the octagon.

and after his loss to gsp he said "good job buddy"

so i dont hate him no more. his attitude remains the same win or lose.

I agree. It's ridiculous to call the greatest 170 of all time overrated. This whole thread senseless.

I've also heard people say "Beating Carlos Newton isn't a big deal". Well, you also have to put it into perspective. Newton was at the top of his game when he faced Hughes, and was a very dangerous opponent.

Sherk was also at the top of his game when he faced Hughes.

As was Frank Trigg(As much as I hate to admit that).
