my most powerfull punch is a right cross. but there is a punch called a hammer punch that is called the death touch that I saw on the descovery chanal on a show called fight science. the messured the amount of force speed velocity ect. it turned out to be more than lethal.

Accuracy and Timing probably have more to do with getting a KO over raw power. The generation of force between two people can have many factors, and many KO artists usually rely on setting up the opponent over swinging wildly.
Absolutley but everything is about accuracy and timing, the question was "most powerful" and the overhand is the most powerful due to full extension of the arm.

DOUBLELEGTAKEDOWN Yes, like Chuck Lidell does to most of his opponents, he lands a hook or cross but usaully as the set-up punch only then he knocks them out with the straight overhand.

just like a hamer make a fist and raise your arm then bring your fist down like a hammer. hit with the bottom of your fist. It can be thrown like strait down or at an angle. The ninjas call it the death tuch. on the discovery chanel show I was talking about they had a ninja preform it. he hit a dummy in the solarplex area and they said it had enough force to stop a persons hart.
Here is a picture.

National Geographic Channel - Fight Science: Video Preview
this is an intro video of the show I saw. It talks alot about what you want to hear. you will see a guy in a black gi throw it tword the end of this video. it dose not look like mutch but it is the death touch.
P.S. The show will be shown again on dec 9 at 9:00

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but the boxer Leon Sphinx, who once fought Mohammed Ali for the title: Wasn't he known for his uppercut? Wasn't his uppercut known as "The Sphinx Jinx?"
Leon Spinx was a south paw with a hard right hook he dubbed "the Spinx Jinx." Besides Ali he also fought other notables like Mike Tyson who knocked him out in 91 seconds. A waste of a PPV.

Clean effective punching is the name of the game when boxing and it's the punch you don't see coming that gets you. The left hook is a punch thrown tight on the inside that opponents don't see coming because of the distance and angle it comes from. The right uppercut (slightly more powerful than the left uppercut) is another punch effective for knockouts because it's thrown tight and on the inside. They NEVER see this one coming too unless they are looking down.

by overhand do you mean like a chuck liddel KO punch with the whip of the fist like a clock at the end of the motion?
It doesn't have to be as dramatic as Chuck's punch. It is sort of like a cross with a vertical hook. I don't know how much that helps. "Performed in a similar motion as the hook, it is done in a manner so the blow lands from a vertical angle rather than a horizontal one. It involves leaning the upper body sideways while rotating the striking arm towards the target. It is useful in surprising an opponent who is suspecting a more 'orthodox' punch." Found this on a boxing website. I guess the punch is hard to explain with out a visual. I will look for one.

A good overhand punch is described by Mark Hatmaker (in his book Savage Srikes) as "pitching a softball in a trajectory where it will land 6 inches in front of your lead foot." In application against a straight boxing high lead cover (I cover that in my post here), it will end up landing high on the persons head behind their cover as they turn into the angle of a straight punch. It's definitely a punch that commits your body mass into the technique, and is best used after setting up the opponent so that they expect more "orthodox" punches.

From my own experience, I'm not able to throw a good overhand punch, butI can definitely see its applicable use in the ring.

There's a difference between the most powerful and the most dangerous punch. The hammer fist mentioned earlier could be deadly if you hit in the right spot, but doesn't pack as much power as a simple cross. A hook rotates your head while a cross just snaps it back- they do different things.

I'd speculate that it's probably easier to knock someone out with a hook, because as your head rotates it pinches nerves and arteries, sending your body a signal to shut down, while you'd need to hit someone with enough force to cause a concussion to knock someone out with a straight punch.
